User avatar is automatically reset

New User avatar is automatically reset using Local storage, AWS S3 and Google GCE as storage.

Having the same issue. Avatar resets to default whether changed by admin or user; simultaneously having issue with 500 errors when uploading files to local storage, despite permissions being open on folder, now wondering if the two issues are non-trivially connected

I'm seeing this too on our new rocketchat setup using GridFS. RC version 2.3.2. I recall not seeing this problem with version 2.2.x.

I did not spot any errors in the debug log, and it looks like that the image upload succeeds and gets saved into profile. But the avatar immediately flashes back to initials in milliseconds after pressing the save button.

I disabled CSP in Nginx, looked for any errors in browser debug console and tried changing avatar via admin user console too with the same result.

For the record our second RC instance does not have this issue. That setup is couple of years old, so it may have some cruft in the database that prevents reproducing the issue on it.

I did a fresh install and the issue persisted.

It turned out to be this line, visible during the start of the service:

ufs: cannot set temp directory permissions 0700 (EPERM: operation not permitted, chmod '/tmp/ufs')

We run rocketchat with a service account dedicated for it. The fix was just to take the path into ownership of the service:

chown -R serviceaccount:serviceaccount /tmp/ufs

Having the same issue on RC 3.0 with local storage (upgraded in several steps). Avatar image can be uploaded, but as soon as you save the profile settings it is replaced by a bold character. Before you upload an image, it shows only the full user name instead of a generated image.
ufs: temp directory created at "/tmp/ufs" looks fine at start-up.

So these cases have ldap and ldap sync in common?

Lack of /tmp/ufs directory and permissions case we had was not related to LDAP, as the instance suffering from it did not use one.

But other similar ones could be. We certainly have had Avatars reset when we had LDAP sync for avatars enabled, but last time I tried it was in 2017, so a long time ago.

What is the relation between temp folder permissions and avatar being automatically reset? I guess we need to document the required temp folder permissions, but fixing that will not prevent users avatars from being automatically reset.
