C: other eol-4.0 Closed because Qubes 4.0 has reached end-of-life (EOL) hardware support help wanted This issue will probably not get done in a timely fashion without help from community contributors. P: default Priority: default. Default priority for new issues, to be replaced given sufficient information. T: bug Type: bug report. A problem or defect resulting in unintended behavior in something that exists.

Qubes OS version (e.g., R3.2):

R3.2

Affected TemplateVMs (e.g., fedora-23, if applicable):

fedora-23

Expected behavior:

Connect a Huawei 4G USB modem to sys-net through sys-usb and enjoy uninterrupted mobile networking.

Actual behavior:

Everything works, the 4G modem is detected by sys-net as Ethernet device, network is connected and everything works for around a minute and then sys-net becomes unresponsive.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  • Create sys-usb
  • Connect 4G USB modem to the laptop
  • qvm-usb displays
    sys-usb:2-1 12d1:14dc:HUAWEI_MOBILE_HUAWEI_MOBILE
  • qvm-usb -a sys-net sys-usb:2-1
  • qvm-usb displays
    sys-usb:2-1 12d1:14dc:HUAWEI_MOBILE_HUAWEI_MOBILE (attached to sys-net)
  • Shortly after a pop-up message is displayed from sys-net about establishing Ethernet connection. Internet connection works etc.
  • After around 30-60 seconds network connection to other VMs dies and sys-net becomes unresponsive. You cannon open a console in it or shut it down. Qvm-kill works however.

You can try to troubleshoot a frozen VM by accessing its console from dom0, for example using dmesg

  • To access the virtual machine console, use: sudo xl console vmname
  • login as root, and run dmesg

Check the kernel messages for sys-net and sys-usb

I have a similar issue where the USB Proxy fails on connect in sys-net. (If you want I can make a new issue for it.

Here's one kernel oops. I repeated the above scenario and this time it was sys-usb that froze with 50% CPU usage. Here's what appeared on the console when I tried qvm-usb -d on the device.

I'm on qubes testing repository so I'm not sure I can reproduce the issue, however in my case the device is disconnected after 30 seconds.

@kravietz @ATFNightHunter can you try on qubes testing ?

to install qubes testing packages : Updating software in dom0

I just did, no dice sorry.

It has the same effect. Connect -> Register on network -> Select Verizon LTE Contract -> Connects -> Fails.

I’m new to both Linux and Qubes OS.

I have installed Qubes OS 4.0.3 and wonder how I can connect to the internet using a USB modem (HUAWEI E3372 with also Linux drivers on it), and I hope I can get some help from you more experienced users.
.
.
Here is what I have done so far:

After a successful install of Qubes OS, I restarted the pc and plugged the USB modem in the pc before letting the pc do the last configurations.

When I logged into Qubes OS, a red icon in the upper right corner of the screen showed “No network connection”. I then right clicked on it, selected “Edit connections” -> Add, and followed the guide.

Afterwards I restarted the pc, and a new window came up regarding connecting to the Tor network. I have tried both a direct connection and all the bridged connections. They all stop at 2 or 5 %.

And now I’m stuck as I have run out of ideas.
.
.
Questions:

  1. Is it necessary to use a VPN to use Qubes to connect to the internet ?

  2. What shall I do to get connected to the internet ?

As explained in our issue reporting guidelines, qubes-issues is not intended for asking questions and receiving support. For that, we have the qubes-users mailing list instead. I suggest asking your questions there, since you are more likely to receive a helpful response there.
