Thanks for the submission! One question: can you provide some more detail as to the non-profit regulations or status of the Open Home Foundation? I'm still trying to understand how to map various kinds of non-US organizations to the typical US IRS categories of 501c3/4/6. These are all strictly non-profit in US law, and then have various requirements in terms of purpose, charitable restrictions, donation tax advantages, and the like. My first reading of a Swiss Verein is that it's not necessarily restricted by law to remain non-profit. In particular, how does the separation of the Verein from the Nabu Casa work? The direct tie to your "inaugural partner" seems like it might be a different kind of relationship from other typical organizations we list here. Does Nabu Casa have a unique and exclusive relationship, or is it more like one of (potentially other) major donor/partners who funds the non-profit, like US 501(c)(6) Business Leagues do - similar to the Linux Foundation, which has various major sponsors, but operates itself strictly as non-profit. Does that make sense? In any case, definitely nice to see Home Assistant have a formal home focused on users and community first! |

We are actually in the process of transitioning from Verein to Stiftung (not publicly announced yet until next week). We are a non-profit with tax-exempt status. We are also in the process of starting a private 501c3 aligned with it (but that's just for American companies to make it easier to donate money, not our main entity). Nabu Casa is a commercial partner of the Open Home Foundation. There is no limit on the number of commercial partners, and there might be more in the future. A commercial partner can use the Home Assistant brand, but in return needs to commit the majority of their resources to develop Open Home Foundation projects and ecosystem. |
