Fix Spacingd updating non-metadata entries that share the key prefix - #9167
garciadias wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Since Project-MONAI#8269, Spacingd refreshes every entry whose key starts with '<key>_', assuming it is a metadata dict. Entries such as a string 'image_path' or an int 'image_index' then raise AttributeError, and a non-string key raises on startswith. Only update string-keyed entries that are mutable mappings. Adds tests for the metadata refresh introduced in Project-MONAI#8269 and for leaving non-metadata entries untouched. Fixes Project-MONAI#9165 Signed-off-by: R. Garcia-Dias <rafaelagd@gmail.com>
📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to The filter preserves metadata refresh while leaving unrelated values untouched, and the added tests cover both behaviors. The only remaining request is test documentation, so no material merge risk is identified. Pre-merge checks |

MONAI 1.6 Spacingd calls .update() on every '<key>_*' entry, so the string 'image_path' that MONAI Label adds to every request raises. Tracked upstream in Project-MONAI/MONAI#9165 with a fix in Project-MONAI/MONAI#9167. Non-strict xfail so a fixed MONAI reports XPASS instead of failing. Signed-off-by: R. Fixes #9165.
Description
Since #8269,
Spacingdrefreshes every dictionary entry whose key starts with"<key>_", assuming each one is a metadata dict. That breaks in two ways for NIfTI inputs:image_path, an intimage_index) raisesAttributeError: '...' object has no attribute 'update';k.startswith.MONAI Label hits this on every NIfTI inference: its pipeline always sets
data["image_path"], and the radiology app usesSpacingd("image", ...). Minimal repro (works on 1.5.1, fails on 1.6.x and currentdev):The fix only updates entries with a string key that are a
MutableMapping. The metadata refresh from #8269 is otherwise unchanged.#8269 shipped without a test, so this PR adds two:
test_meta_dict_updated_for_nifti: checks that the#8269behaviour is kept (the meta dict is refreshed from the resampled image). It passes both before and after this change.test_non_meta_dict_entries_untouched: string, int and non-string-key entries are left untouched. It fails before this change and passes after.Verified locally:
tests.transforms.test_spacing,test_spacingdandinverse.test_invertdall pass (62 tests). The two MONAI Label tests that were failing (test_histogram_graphcut_inferer_*) also pass against this branch. The pre-commit hooks (ruff, black, isort, DCO) pass.Types of changes
