Description

With Compose(..., lazy=True), the interpolation mode set on each transform was ignored when pending operations were applied. A binary label processed with mode="nearest" (for example Spacingd(keys="label", pixdim=1.3, mode="nearest")) came out with soft, interpolated values. The same pipeline with lazy=False correctly returned {0, 1}.

Root cause

  1. kwargs_from_pending (monai/transforms/lazy/utils.py) only reads lazy_interpolation_mode and lazy_padding_mode from the top level of a pending operation. No transform writes those keys. Spatial transforms record their modes in extra_info["mode"] and extra_info["padding_mode"]. So the mode was always None, and SpatialResample fell back to its default (bilinear).
  2. apply_pending (monai/transforms/lazy/functional.py) merges each pending op's kwargs with cur_kwargs.update(new_kwargs). A later op that has no mode (e.g. SpatialPadd, CenterSpatialCropd) overwrote an earlier mode with None.

Changes

  • kwargs_from_pending now falls back to extra_info["mode"] / extra_info["padding_mode"] when the explicit lazy attributes are not set. Explicit lazy attributes still take precedence. Recorded modes are converted to values the lazy resampler supports:
    • grid-sample modes (nearest, bilinear, bicubic) and spline orders 0–5 are kept;
    • nearest-exact becomes nearest; linear and trilinear become bilinear;
    • modes with no grid-sample equivalent (e.g. area) and pad modes stored by pad transforms (e.g. "constant") are ignored, which keeps the previous default behaviour for them.
  • apply_pending no longer lets None values from later pending ops overwrite kwargs set by earlier ones.
  • Compose(overrides=...) behaviour is unchanged and still takes priority.
  • The existing behaviour of is_compatible_apply_kwargs (always True) is unchanged. If a single key mixes modes across transforms, the last non-None mode still wins.

Before / after (32³ random binary label, affine=eye(4); number of unique values in the output)

Pipeline (mode="nearest") lazy=False lazy=True before lazy=True after
Spacingd 2 744 2
Spacingd + SpatialPadd 2 744 2
Spacingd + CenterSpatialCropd 2 810 2
Rotated + ResizeWithPadOrCropd 2 43115 2

Keys configured with bilinear in the same pipeline (e.g. Spacingd(["img", "label"], mode=("bilinear", "nearest"))) are still interpolated.

Note on the existing workaround: passing overrides={"label": {"mode": "nearest"}} to Compose already produced binary output before this change. The lazy resampling docs describe overrides as a way to change parameters "without having to modify fields like mode and padding_mode". The apply_pending docstring also describes comparing pending transforms' mode values. Both imply the per-transform mode should be honoured without overrides, which is what this PR restores.

Behaviour change: lazy pipelines whose transforms set a non-default mode/padding_mode now produce output consistent with eager execution, so their numerical output changes. No API changes.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
  • Breaking change (fix or new feature that would cause existing functionality to change).
  • New tests added to cover the changes.
  • Integration tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh -f -u --net --coverage.
  • Quick tests passed locally by running ./runtests.sh --quick --unittests --disttests.
  • In-line docstrings updated.
  • Documentation updated, tested make html command in the docs/ folder.

Validation (Windows, Python venv with torch 2.14.1+cpu; ./runtests.sh was not run):

  • python -m pytest tests/transforms/compose/test_lazy_interp_mode.py -q: passed (9 tests) with this change; all 9 fail without it.
  • python -m pytest <81 lazy/spatial/croppad/compose test files under tests/transforms> tests/integration/test_spatial_combine_transforms.py tests/data/meta_tensor/test_spatial_ndim.py -q -n 8: 2703 passed, 0 failed with this change. Without it, the only failures were the 9 new tests. Both runs report the same 52 pre-existing collection errors, from pytest collecting imported test_* helper functions as tests ("fixture not found").
  • black -l 120 --skip-magic-trailing-comma and ruff check --line-length 120 on the changed files: passed.

Add the required Google-style docstrings. The changed definition documentation and new test definitions do not meet the repository’s docstring instruction.

  • monai/transforms/lazy/utils.py#L162-L164: add Args and Returns sections to kwargs_from_pending.
  • tests/transforms/compose/test_lazy_interp_mode.py#L52-L52: add docstrings to all four new test methods.

As per path instructions, “Docstrings should be present for all definition which describe each variable, return value, and raised exception in the appropriate section of the Google-style of docstrings.”

### Description
With `Compose(..., lazy=True)`, the interpolation mode set on each transform was ignored when pending operations were applied. A binary label processed with `mode="nearest"` (for example `Spacingd(keys="label", pixdim=1.3, mode="nearest")`) came out with soft, interpolated values. The same pipeline with `lazy=False` correctly returned `{0, 1}`.

This was caused by:
1. `kwargs_from_pending` (`monai/transforms/lazy/utils.py`) only reads `lazy_interpolation_mode` and `lazy_padding_mode` from the top level of a pending operation. No transform writes those keys. Spatial transforms record their modes in `extra_info["mode"]` and `extra_info["padding_mode"]`. So the mode was always `None`, and `SpatialResample` fell back to its default (bilinear).
2. `apply_pending` (`monai/transforms/lazy/functional.py`) merges each pending op's kwargs with `cur_kwargs.update(new_kwargs)`. A later op that has no mode (e.g. `SpatialPadd`, `CenterSpatialCropd`) overwrote an earlier mode with `None`.

Changes:
- `kwargs_from_pending` now falls back to `extra_info["mode"]` / `extra_info["padding_mode"]` when the explicit lazy attributes are not set. Explicit lazy attributes still take precedence. Recorded modes are converted to values the lazy resampler supports:
  - grid-sample modes (`nearest`, `bilinear`, `bicubic`) and spline orders 0–5 are kept;
  - `nearest-exact` becomes `nearest`; `linear` and `trilinear` become `bilinear`;
  - modes with no grid-sample equivalent (e.g. `area`) and pad modes stored by pad transforms (e.g. `"constant"`) are ignored, which keeps the previous default behaviour for them.
- `apply_pending` no longer lets `None` values from later pending ops overwrite kwargs set by earlier ones.
- `Compose(overrides=...)` behaviour is unchanged and still takes priority.
- The existing behaviour of `is_compatible_apply_kwargs` (always `True`) is unchanged. If a single key mixes modes across transforms, the last non-`None` mode still wins.

@coderabbitai the following have been addressed w/ the latest force push

  • kwargs_from_pending (monai/transforms/lazy/utils.py): added Args and Returns sections. The function doesn't raise (non-dict items return {}), so there's no Raises section.
  • tests/transforms/compose/test_lazy_interp_mode.py: added a class docstring and docstrings to all four test methods. The parameterized test_binary_label_stays_binary also documents its arguments.

With the existing docstrings on _lazy_interp_mode, _lazy_padding_mode and apply_pending, every function touched by this PR now has a docstring, which should resolve the Docstring Coverage pre-merge warning.

Normalize metadata padding_mode="mirror" for string interpolation.

When the fallback in kwargs_from_pending receives extra_info["padding_mode"] == "mirror" and a string interpolation mode, it passes "mirror" to the torch/grid-sample resampler. _to_torch_resample_padding_mode has no mapping for "mirror", so the non-axis-aligned lazy operation can fail. Convert this value to "reflection" only for string interpolation. Keep "mirror" for integer interpolation, which uses the ndimage backend. Explicit LazyAttr.PADDING_MODE values bypass this new fallback and are unchanged.

Suggested fix
     padding_mode = pending_item.get(LazyAttr.PADDING_MODE, None)
     if padding_mode is None:
         padding_mode = _lazy_padding_mode(extra_info.get("padding_mode"))

@ThomasKierski Verified the docstring updates in the current branch. kwargs_from_pending has Args and Returns sections. The test class and all four test methods have docstrings, including arguments for the parameterized test.

The existing helper and apply_pending docstrings are present. This addresses the reported docstring omissions. The next Docstring Coverage check must confirm that the warning clears.
