Thoughts on future for PAPI.

Name

First of all the scope has expanded beyond a pure API so we might need a new name despite me liking the Acronym PAPI. Choosing a suitable name that has an easy acronym is essential for the branding and spreading of it.

Suggestions (I prefer PREG):

  • Pirate Party Registry - PPREG
  • PIRate Registry - PIRR
  • Pirate REGistry - PREG
  • Registry of Pirate Parties - REPP

Target/Aim

I believe mostly in option #3 and working towards #4 depending on how much time we are able to dedicate and if we find someone to help with front-end parts.

  1. API for developers
    • functional but we clearly want more than just this
  2. Backend registry
    • sourcing information for projects
    • only a few people using it actively
    • basic visual interface (only data needed)
  3. Registry for pirates
    • Pirates searching data/connections
    • implicit knowledge of pirates = no explaining
    • Reference/stats (# of parties, data, contacts)
  4. Public registry of Pirate Parties
    • Visual and functional UX of data
    • Explain basics (what is a PP, Pirate History, Global movement)
    • Embeddable data (e.g. wordpress plugin, pirate world)
    • Aggregated information (PP worldmap, soc media follower stats, top images shared)
    • Additional information (e.g. linking wiki-data, rss for press-releases / Pirate Times articles)

Modular vs Integrated

We can either build a larger more extensive data for API or make it more modular by building different parts on top / parallel to it. I believe it's more important to have a core of data that stays fairly static over time and if we'd like to expand it we can put data that needs to be updated more frequently into something that can hook into the API. (e.g. international contacts for each Pirate Party).

Personal usage

  • Reference for research (mostly when writing articles for Pirate Times and needing info)
  • Directing pirates / potential pirates (I often point them to the PAPI page of the pirate party they are looking for)
  • Statistics for social media (not directly through the API but still use it as a reference point)
  • Embedding (not yet but plan to start using WP plugin to embed data of PP when article is about a specific party)

Wishlist

A list of things that I believe would be of great use and hope to see sometime in future

  • PP world map (Using http://jvectormap.com/ to make data more visual)
  • Social Media statistics, logging number of followers on main social media platforms (fb, twitter, google+?), thus being able to create graphs and see changes.
  • Soc media aggregated followers app. (a simple app showing the aggregated number of followers for all Pirate Parties). A number increasing daily could be motivational, e.g. displayed at hq with help of a raspberry pi.
  • Popular social media posts (extracting this info would simplify for more PP's sharing similar content when popular)
