Depends-On: OpenSourceAWE/SymbolicAWEModels.jl#424

SymbolicAWEModels is splitting a kite's design from what a run does to it. The structure keeps only the design. Positions, velocities, forces, rest lengths in flight and the wing's attitude move into a state the model owns. V3Kite read all of these off the structure, so it does not load against that change. This branch makes V3Kite read and write a run through the model's state. It also builds each model only once its structure is final, because a model now starts its run from the structure as it is when the model is built.

s.sam.sys_struct.points[10].pos_w # before: FieldError on the new SymbolicAWEModels
s.sys.points[10].pos_w # after: s.sys is the run's state
start_from_state!(sam, sys, path) # before
start_from_state!(sam, path) # after: the state goes onto the model's

s.sys of the kite model is now the run's state rather than the structure. Its records read every other property through to the structure, so code that sets a brake or reads a mass through it keeps working. Steering and depower given the run's state change the tapes the run flies with. Given the structure, they change the design before a model exists.

A saved settled or relaxed state is restored onto the model's state, velocities included, as before. The function that hands back a structure in its settled shape now writes that shape into the structure's starting pose. A model built from it starts at rest there, because a structure no longer carries a velocity. Its only user, the flight replay's reference model, overwrites the velocities from the flight data at every step.

Two writes are gone because the state now derives what they wrote. A tether's stretched length is computed from its segments, so the flight replay no longer sets it from the data; it still sets the rest length. A beam body's principal frame is computed from its orientation whenever it is read, so restoring a pose from flight data no longer refreshes it by hand.

Model parameters set on the structure after the model is built, such as the wing's mass and drag spread over its nodes or the bridle material, still reach the run: the model copies them from the structure at every step. Only the starting pose is fixed when the model is built.

The body-frame plot used to move the plotted wing's position onto the control unit as a side effect. It now draws in a frame centred on the control unit and changes nothing it is handed. That frame is defined once, for the simulated points and the photogrammetry points alike; I searched the package and its extension for an existing body-frame or control-unit transform first and found only the plot's own inline copies.

Only the state half of the change is here. The pull request it depends on has not yet moved the transforms (where a run flies the kite from) out of SymbolicAWEModels. V3Kite still uses SymbolicAWEModels' own transforms and repositioning, unchanged. Moving to the geometry package's versions follows once that pull request carries them.

This needs that pull request merged and released before it can merge, and that one in turn waits on a KiteGeometry release (OpenSourceAWE/KiteGeometry.jl#68). Until then the checks here install the released SymbolicAWEModels and fail, as expected. The bound and lock files move to that release then.

The upstream branch's latest commit moves structure loading into KiteGeometry. Nothing here needs to change for it, but two upstream bugs currently stop it loading the beam kite. Both are reported to that branch: its precompile step reads its own structure file before it has registered the columns it reads, and a wing point riding a beam is given the wing as a body as well, which it then refuses.

Refs #86 · task V3Kite.jl-86

SymbolicAWEModels#424 takes positions, velocities, forces and the other
run state off the structure's rows and keeps them in the model's state,
`sam.state`. V3Kite read them off `sam.sys_struct` throughout.

Run reads and live tape changes now go to `sam.state`, and `s.sys` of a
V3KITE is that state. Models are built once the structure is placed and
adjusted, because the run starts from the structure as it is then. The
settled and relaxed states are restored onto the model's state;
`load_settled_struct` bakes the settled pose into the structure.

Good

  • Every read of the run in the diffed files (positions, velocities, forces, heading, va_b) moves from sam.sys_struct to sam.state or s.sys; checked with rg, and what still reads sam.sys_struct is design, brake or upstream replay/plot API
  • The model is now built after geometry adjustments and placement in create_v3_model, build_replay_sys_struct, setup_settling_model and both settle_wing branches, as the card plans
  • settle_wing's two copies of the init! block are now one call after the branch, which removes duplication in a function the PR already opens
  • plot_body_frame_local no longer writes wing.pos_w/pos_b into its input; kcu_body_positions computes the frame once, matching the card's side-effect claim
  • start_from_state! drops the redundant sys argument; both callers are updated and the changelog marks it BREAKING
  • The one test edit wraps the structure in SystemState and keeps its assertions, so nothing is weakened (§8)
  • Dropping the unused R_b_w in compute_kite_aoa is dead-code removal around the change

Not good

  • examples/flight_replay.jl:74 — The stretched_len = row.tether_len write is deleted without the card mentioning it. If stretched_len is still a state field, the replay no longer seeds it from data; if it is derived now, say so in the card.
  • src/flight_data.jl:362 — The init_principal_frame!(bodies, points) call is removed silently. Beam bodies whose pos_w/R_b_to_w were just rewritten may now keep a stale principal frame unless the new SymbolicAWEModels derives it; the card should name and justify this change in behaviour.
  • init_winch_torque!(sys) in src/sim_helpers.jl:85 still names its parameter sys, but its docstring signature now says init_winch_torque!(state)
  • plot_replay widens syss::Vector{<:SystemStructure} to a bare Vector instead of Vector{<:SystemState}, so a wrong argument now fails deep inside rather than at dispatch
  • In the incidence block, R_w_b and kcu are recomputed next to kcu_body_positions(sys1), and kcu_b = zeros(3) is a stand-in; the frame is defined twice in one function
  • examples/flight_replay.jl:278 still calls distribute_wing_mass!/distribute_wing_drag! on the structure after build_replay_sys_struct has built and initialised the model; this is exactly the card's named risk, in an example that was edited but not run
  • build_v3_model and relax_bridle.jl call apply_kite_material!(sys, …) after create_v3_model has already built the model; if the model snapshots the structure at construction, this conflicts with 'build once the structure is final'
  • build_v3_model's settled branch still returns sam.sys_struct as sys, so its two branches return a structure while v3kite.jl now discards it; the return contract is not stated anywhere
  • The card does not say what was searched before adding kcu_body_positions (§2)

on purpose: a reviewer sharing its blind spots would not flag its mistakes.

Local full suite: PASS (4 min, Julia 1.13.0, one cell of the matrix)

Define the KCU body frame once and use it for the photogrammetry points
too; restrict plot_replay to run states; name init_winch_torque!'s
argument `state`; say what build_v3_model returns. Bring back the
replay's aero side-force warning, reading the run state. Add the
changelog entry for the move to the run state.

Answers to the body findings, in order. (1) init_winch_torque! parameter renamed to state in 24fd3f3. (2) plot_replay now takes Vector{<:SystemState} (24fd3f3); passing structures now fails at the call. (3) The KCU frame is defined once now: kcu_body_positions takes optional world positions and the photogrammetry points use it; kcu_b is pos_b[1] (24fd3f3). (4) No change: mass, drag and material are parameters the model copies from the structure at every step, so setting them after the build still reaches the run. Only the starting pose is fixed at the build. The card now says so. (5) No change, same reason: apply_kite_material! sets parameters, and it runs before init! just as it does on main. (6) Docstring now says both branches return the model and its structure (24fd3f3). (7) Card now says what was searched before kcu_body_positions was added.

Main released v2.0.0. The run-state entry was unreleased, so it leaves the
v2.0.0 section; the changelog.d fragment carries it, now naming plot_replay too.
