Roll printing (label/sticker printers)

I've spotted Real roll paper support in cups-filters task from GSOC 2020 but could not find any additional information on it.
Was it researched and/or implemented, and what's the current recommendations on using roll paper?

I wrote a classic CUPS filter+backend for cheap Bluetooth thermal printers, and ended up using "endless" paper size of 48×999mm. This size is detected by the filter and the blank lines of the input raster image is cut off from the top and the bottom.
Can I make any better?

Probably not. IPP doesn't have a notion of an "endless" paper size - there is always a length - but you can certainly implement auto-truncation when printing a file.

All other label printer drivers I've seen don't do that for some reason.
