I think that it might be an issue with mawk command (the default awk "alternative") in the debian 10...

Compare these two commands (first one has wrong output and the other correct):

$ echo 'abrt-data' | awk '{sub(/^[[:space:]]*/, "", $0); print;}'
brt-data

with

$ echo 'xbrt-data' | awk '{sub(/^[[:space:]]*/, "", $0); print;}'
xbrt-data

It seems that sub string function in mawk has problem.

EDIT: now when I look at it - it is obvious that the problem is unrecognized string class [:space:] each of the characters ([, :, s, p, a, c, e and ]) are replaced with empty string instead of the whitespace as intended.

EDIT2: It was already reported as bug because mawk advertised that supports extended regex while it does not:

Unfortunately as of this writing Debian had not updated the version of mawk to 1.3.4 which targets this issue (since 2009!) - I am using regex character classes in more instances and I would like continue to do so cause it would be fragile to replace them with incomplete list of concrete characters.

Maybe I can do simple sanity check on start and abort when discovering that awk command fails to do correct regex replacement.
