The influence of yaw angle on tower top load

Hi everyone,

I set up three wind turbines to run simultaneously, with yaw angles of -5, 0, and 5, respectively.

The results showed that as the yaw angle increased, the sum of squares of the tower top load in the XY direction also increased, which did not meet my expectations.

In my expectation, when the yaw angle was at+5 and -5, the sum of squares of the tower top load in the XY direction should be equal in magnitude.

Perhaps someone can explain this phenomenon？

Can you clarify; are you plotting YawBrMxp in your time series?

I would not expect all wind turbine loads to be symmetric with respect to yaw misalignment, due to the combination of multiple interactions that include not just yaw, but also tilt, shear, blade rotation direction, gravity, etc.

Our paper in the publication process of the Wind Energy Science journal showing how yaw misalignment and wake steering impact not only power production of a wind farm, but also structural loads, indicates that one yaw direction is much more preferential than the other in terms of structural loads: https://wes.copernicus.org/preprints/wes-2024-6/.
