I am modelling a 5MW_OC3_Monopile WT. I want to add a cone at the water line. Does OpenFast offer the possibility of adding a cone? How to model a WT with a cone?

Dear @ime00001,

Yes, OpenFAST supports the modeling of conical members in the substructure. Hydrodynamically, you can define a strip-theory member in HydroDyn with a linear taper by specifying a member that connects two joints with distinct outer diameters. You can also model tapered beam elements in SubDyn by specifying different cross-sectional properties at each end of the member if you need that.

I am not sure I quite understood your response. Could you please clarify more where and how to edit the files above? Is there an example somewhere that I can refer to?

The HydroDyn model of the OC3-Hywind spar in the OpenFAST r-test contains a tapered member in the strip-theory solution. That is, member 2, which connects joints 2 and 3 has different outer diameters at the two joints. See: https://github.com/OpenFAST/r-test/blob/main/glue-codes/openfast/5MW_OC3Spar_DLL_WTurb_WavesIrr/NRELOffshrBsline5MW_OC3Hywind_HydroDyn.dat.

This example doesn't make use of SubDyn, but the approach would be similar in SubDyn.
