This PR updates the iterative method and solver classes. It includes all of the infrastructure improvements in #646 minus the actual SLEPc code. This will get all of the solver improvements into v1.0 without requiring a new package dependency (SLEPc).
The SLEPc solvers will be introduced in v2.0.
