CPU spike/slowness in latest Windows 10 OS patch

Describe the bug

After applying the usual patch Tuesday patches on 5/13 for Windows 10 - OpenShell lags for around a second when clicking the start menu or hitting Win key, CPU spikes causing fan spin each time. Same system has been instant for a long time with no issues with OpenShell so assuming there's something in the latest patches which has messed with something

Same issue here. Interestingly, the issue appeared for me around the same time even though I did not install the Windows update (kb5058379?). I installed it today and observed no change. At least, I suspect that this is the update you are refering to (released on 5/13).

Some more information - this delay does not happen on my 2nd and 3rd display (non-primary displays). The menu opens instantly there. When I open Windows' own start menu (shift + click or shift + win key) the delay also does not happen even on my primary display.

During that delay the taskbar also seems unresponsive (it doesn't respond to clicks nor shows mouse hover effects).

I wonder if it may be related to a Windows Defender AV update instead? I notice that it seems to be the "Antimalware Service Executable" process that spikes in CPU if I keep hitting the windows button to emphasize it...

Confirming no delay on Windows built-in start menu too

Edit: Ignore this - switched off virus protection completely and the same issue, delay and CPU spike, spike just shifts to "system", red herring

I'm running W10 Pro, fully updated at this point (May 27, 2025.) Am using Open Shell version 4.4.191, but am about to back up my settings, uninstall Open Shell, install version 4.4.196 and then import the backed up settings. I also noticed that the Start Menu delay began happening right after the KB5058379 was installed. However, I'm beginning to think that it might have been a concurrent update of Windows Security that's causing the issue, despite having disabled Windows Security to see if the problem remained and observing that it did. After I update Open Shell, I'm going to try adding its executable to the Windows Security Exclusion list to see if that stops the problem. Man, I really, REALLY don't want to have to use the badly designed Windows version of the Start Menu.

I have completely disabled all windows defender features and it still lags for me
