Auto-download a server's map?

host_error: model maps/a_map.bsp not found
unknown command "cl_serverextension_download"

How to remedy?

Related to Shpoike/Quakespasm#146 probably.

vkQuake do not support this extension, and do not plan to, like all others QuakeSpasm derivatives except QSS.

Normally in the Darkplaces protocol, the vkQuake client will NOT advertise this capability to the server, and the Server won't attempt to send maps to clients. So, I have no idea what is happening here.

Yeah it was compiled without debug info, or was a stripped binary, too bad. Unless you proceed to compile yourself, of course.

Fine, give me an example of server and how you connect to it, I may try, but I don't see much point, see below.

Because it was never implemented, and I don't intend to. The QS derivatives are single-player oriented ports with no intention of being compatible with the multiplayer-dedicated QuakeWorld ones, and vice versa.

FTEQW or QSS are the only exception, attempting to bridge those 2 worlds. QSS has cl_serverextension_download implemented, so using either FTEQW or QSS may work better in your case.

You can play multiplayer between ports of the QS familly all right, (it is still better to have a single port for all) but it implies every client must have a copy of the assets the server wants to play beforehand (maps, models, textures and so on).

So you can basically only play between friends, or have the assets pre-installed on your side when you want to play a specific map because no automatic downloading will take place (Host_Error: Model maps/castlev2.bsp not found)

Compiling https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vkquake there are 2 packages:

I used the 1st, sorry.

The server is CRMOD 7 - DENVE (the 1st in the list).

I don't intend to.

Why :( ? Your vkQuake is imo the best Quake port, I'm lazy to manually download the map to what directory?

Given the mod @jebez1 want to play https://crmod7.quakeone.com/ on such a server https://servers.quakeone.com/server/11 this is very likely the best solution, because vkQuake at present wouldn't even run it (irrespective of the map download thing) because it is lacking some extensions (forceinfokey at least) used by this mod that are present in QSS and QSS-M but not in vk.

I may or may not add the missing extensions to vkQuake in the future in the meantime QSS-M looks the way to go for the best experience.

I don't think I'm going to add the automatic map download though, too many moving parts on both server and client side to my taste.

This server used tox.bsp https://quakeone.com/qrack/maps/tox.bsp that I downloaded to /home/username/.vkquake/id1/maps : it worked.
https://qssm.quakeone.com/releases/QSS-M_v1.6.5_linux64.zip (there isn't in https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?O=0&K=quake&SeB=nd&SB=n&SO=a ): automatic, as expected (also sounds).

I'm confused why so many Quake ports, 1 is enough?

We can now use the mod using changes made in #922. The download part is missing though. Maybe it is not too complicated to add from QSS, but this is for another time, so I'll keep this issue open as Enhancement.
