Network Configuration

In order to start scouting, there are a couple of physical things that need to be connected and configured.

Network Switch

A network switch is also needed in order to connect the computers together. If you decide to pick your own, keep in mind that you need one port per scout (including the host) and that switches require a power source. To remedy the powersource, a USB powered switch can be used so it can be powered by a laptop. Unfortunetly, USB powered switches are limited to 5 ports so two will most likely be needed. Personally, we recommend this switch from amazon.

Ethernet Cables

To actually connect the computers, ethernet cabales are needed. They can be picked up for cheap from amazon or similar retailer. The type of Ethernet (cat-5, cat-6, etc) does not matter, but the length should be considered. This can be different for each team, but the minimum (if the scouts are packed in in a block taking up two rows of bleachers) would probably be 6 feet. 10-12 feet is what we recommend. You don't want the cables to be too taunt or too loose as they can be a tripping hazard in the stands. You will need one cable per device (and another if you are using a 5 port switch with 6+ devices, to connect the two switches together).

Ethernet to USB Adapters

Note that if the devices connecting to the scouting system don't have ethernet ports, such as thin laptops or most chromebooks, an Ethernet to USB adapter will also be needed. Interestingly, some mobile phones have adapters that could potentially allow them to also connect, but this hasn't been tested by us.

Connecting Devices

Once all components have been collected, you can begin to connect everything together. Connect all devices as shown in this network diagram: TODO ADD ACTUAL IMAGE OF HARDWARE

Host configuration

Once everything is connected, the host needs to be configured to a static IP. Continue here to learn how.
