Linux: install toolchain manually instead of ppa
Browse files Browse the repository at this point in the history
The ppa recently switched to gcc version 6.2.1 and caused some problems.
Therefore, I vote to recommend the manually installed version at 4.9 or
5.4.

Update the package list and install the following dependencies. Packages with specified versions should be installed with this particular package version.

Make sure to remove the packaged version before adding the ppa.

```sh
sudo apt-get remove gcc-arm-none-eabi gdb-arm-none-eabi binutils-arm-none-eabi
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-gcc-arm-embedded/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python-serial openocd \
flex bison libncurses5-dev autoconf texinfo build-essential \
libftdi-dev libtool zlib1g-dev \
python-empy gcc-arm-embedded -y
python-empy -y
```

Make sure to remove leftovers before adding the arm-none-eabi toolchain.

```sh
sudo apt-get remove gcc-arm-none-eabi gdb-arm-none-eabi binutils-arm-none-eabi gcc-arm-embedded
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:team-gcc-arm-embedded/ppa
```

If the resulting `gcc-arm-none-eabi` version produces build errors for PX4/Firmware master, please refer to [the bare metal installation instructions](http://dev.px4.io/starting-installing-linux-boutique.html#toolchain-installation) to install version 4.9 or 5.4 manually.
Then follow the [toolchain installation instructions](http://dev.px4.io/starting-installing-linux-boutique.html#toolchain-installation) to install the arm-none-eabi toolchain version 4.9 or 5.4 manually.
