Find centre points for the 32 areas of Liverpool #4
Comments
The centre of Anfield is the crossroads of Utting Avenue and Priory Road, which is at 53.4328/-2.9547 |
For West Derby, presumably it's just in front of St. Mary's church, which is 53.43261/-2.90927 |
Is the centre of Toxteth the cross-roads by the fire station and Squash Nutrition? That's 53.39136/-2.96725 |

The centre of an area is an interesting discussion - should it be population density, most recognisable point, pedestrian use or services density? And I would say all of these factor in as well as the obvious geographic requirements to be roughly central and reasonable equidistant from adjacent areas. I would suggest for Bootle, the Southern end of The Strand Shopping Centre where the Leeds/Liverpool Canal crosses under Stanley Road satisfies these points with most Bootle residents these days probably identifying the Council Offices and Strand as the active centre of the district. Lat/Long: 53.4509/-2.9904 |
So far as Seaforth goes, the temptation to look near the railway station (perhaps at Stella Precinct) should be resisted as it actually lies right on the SE boundary. Given that the area includes part of Rimrose Valley, I suggest the roundabout at the junction of Sandy Lane & Ewart Rd would make a suitable point - although also musing that if biased towards housing/residential density, there could be a case to move more towards Rawson Road. 53.46781/-3.01111 |
I'd also argue for including Waterloo - for the obvious reasons of residency! In which case, the temptation is to head for the railway station on the popular retail South Road but this tends to ignore the equally popular St John's Road and the fact that the area stretches both sides of the A565. So in spite of the fact that many buildings in the area are tagged with the 'Crosby' moniker, I'd suggest The Plaza cinema as a good starting point at 53.47721/-3.02307 |
Thanks for those @DuncReid. Now added. I've also invited you to the "organisation", in case you want to start playing around with anything in more depth. |
Is St. George's Hall a good centre point for the city centre? That's at 53.40820/-2.97991. That doesn't quite reach the Pier Head, so you could argue that the site of the Castle, which is where the Victoria Monument in Derby Square is (right?) would be a better option... I think that only works if we broke out the Georgian Quarter and Fabric District as separate areas though, so let's leave it for now. |
From twitter, Wavertree Town Hall would be a good starting point for Wavertree. That's 53.39846/-2.91762 |
From The Scottie Press:
The would be here for Vauxhall, so 53.42220/-2.98908, and for for Everton it would be the Our Lady Immaculate Church, which is 53.42755/-2.97323 |
For Walton, I'm told Walton church is the centre which is here, so 53.44636/-2.96689 |
For Clubmoor/Norris Green/Tuebrook, Jim Noakes said...
I'm going with Norris Green library to maybe provide a bit of room to add Clubmoor (not sure exactly what to do about that at present), which is 53.44274/-2.93143 And one of the pedestrian crossings on West Derby Road for Tuebrook - skewed a bit towards one end to leave room for Newsham. So that's 53.42471/-2.93201 |
Sefton Park, the centre (half way down Lark Lane) is 53.38109/-2.94595 |
To make #3 easy, and probably so we can include labels, etc. on the site itself, I think we'll need a JSON file containing details of each area we're going to show. The hard bit is finding the geographic centres of everywhere, but finding those also doesn't require any coding :-)
To find the lat/lon of somewhere:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/53.4328/-2.9547
and so the lat/lon is53.4328/-2.9547
