[DEM] Crash During Tests in CI

The DEMApplication sometimes crashes without any tracebacks or signals in the CI. Since this is very similar to #12851 and both apps are based on particles, I'd first take a closer look at utilities/algorithms the DEMApp and MPMApp share.

The CI run in question is this one, from PR #13276. Here are the logs.

Hi @matekelemen, thanks for your report. I will try to have a look. How often does this happen? I didn't meet the same problem in recent PRs.

Hey, this is the first time I've seen this happen with the DEMApplication, but it's a fairly frequent (== about once every two months or so) occurrence with the MPMApp.

Hey, no I haven't run into the issue since I posted, but I haven't opened many PRs lately either. Hopefully if people get a failure, they'll write here instead of just rerunning the CI.

Edit:
It's quite likely that whatever is causing this happens very rarely, so I'd keep this issue open for a while and start thinking about closing it in a few months (provided no failures occur in the meantime).
