Root 0.6.6 stopped before npm publication because the immutable validated tag has no CHANGELOG.md entry. MCP 0.6.6 is already published and is not retried. This narrowly enables the proven same-validated-tag root recovery, pins v0.6.6 to validated SHA 56a57fd, and uses the shipped OSS 0.6.6 release notes only when the changelog extractor has no matching entry. Tests: root workflow 2/2; release controls 20/20. The temporary push recovery trigger will be removed immediately after root publication.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Process
    • Release publishing can now run following changes to the release workflow on the main branch.
    • Release notes can use the release-specific notes file when structured changelog extraction is unavailable.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The release workflow now runs on matching pushes to main and uses pinned release coordinates for that path. It records event-specific recovery state, retains paired-tag verification for validation runs, and falls back to the release notes file when changelog extraction fails.

Changes

Release workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Push trigger and release coordinates
.github/workflows/release.yml
The workflow accepts pushes to main that modify the workflow file. On pushes, it selects tag v0.6.6 and commit 56a57fd823b4815a0774e9436a74e16dd97e4494.
Event-specific verification and changelog fallback
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/tests/root-release-workflow.test.mjs
On pushes, the workflow records RETRY_PUBLISH_SAME_VALIDATED_TAG; validation-triggered runs retain the origin/main comparison. Changelog extraction falls back to the release notes file. Tests assert the trigger, coordinates, verification, and fallback path.

This recovery path would publish root 0.6.6 from a push to main. The package's npm provenance can then name the main commit instead of the validated release tag commit it was built from. This can mislead anyone who verifies the package source, or it can cause the publication to fail. The changelog fallback can also hide extractor errors other than a missing entry. Resolve both before merging, because the push that merges this change triggers publication immediately.

A rabbit checks the release trail,
Then pins the tag against the gale.
The notes step waits if scripts go slow,
A fallback file is there to show.
The workflow hops, then clears the way.

Most package pages on the npm registry have a link to a source repository, but this information isn’t verified and doesn’t point at any specific commit. With the code explorer you can view the contents of a package before you install it, but this doesn’t help you determine where it came from. ... What we need is a way to draw a direct line from the npm package back to the exact source code commit from which it was derived. Much like an art historian tracking the chronology of ownership for a painting, we need a statement of provenance for a package which provides a verifiable record of the originating source and the build steps which were used to assemble the final artifact. ... The Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts, or SLSA, specification was created for exactly this purpose and is what we’re using for our npm provenance statements. The SLSA provenance schema describes a `subject` (our published npm package) as originating from input `materials` (the source repository and commit SHA) which were processed by a `buildConfig` (the steps executed to build/publish the package). These three values give us precisely what we need to understand how the published package was derived from the source. ... To achieve this, we require that packages are built on a trusted CI/CD platform. This provides visibility to the specific commit which triggered the build and the instructions which were used to publish the final artifact. With that information we increase the auditability of the build and make any attempt to tamper with the code much more visible. ... Furthermore, we can use the identity of the CI environment and job (in the form of an OpenID Connect token) to apply a cryptographic signature to the provenance statement–attesting to the validity of the data in a way that can be verified by any consumers of the package. ... As part of the package provenance generation, we create a single-use keypair to sign the provenance statement and then make a call to Sigstore’s Fulcio CA requesting a signing certificate which binds that key to the identity of the CI job. No one needs to manage the key (it’s deleted as soon as the signature is generated) but anyone presented with the signing certificate can verify the signature and also see the identity of the CI job responsible for creating it. ... With that information we increase the auditability of the build and make any attempt to tamper with the code much more visible. ... As part of the signing process, the provenance attestation is uploaded to Sigstore’s Rekor service. This public, tamper-evident transparency log makes it possible to detect if someone later attempts to modify the provenance or the contents of an already published package. ... After the provenance attestation is posted to Rekor, it’s sent to the npm registry alongside the package being published. The registry checks the signature and the identity attached to the signing certificate to ensure that no one is trying to spoof the provenance before accepting the published version. ... When you publish using trusted publishing from GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD, npm automatically generates and publishes provenance attestations for your package. This happens by default—you don&`#39`;t need to add the `--provenance` flag to your publish command. ... Note: Provenance generation is not currently supported for CircleCI. Packages published via CircleCI trusted publishing will not include provenance attestations. ... Provenance provides cryptographic proof of where and how your package was built, allowing users to verify its authenticity. This automatic generation only applies when all of these conditions are met: ... - Publishing via trusted publishing (OIDC) - Publishing from a public repository - Publishing a public package ... Note: Provenance generation is not supported for private repositories, even when publishing public packages. ... ## Disabling provenance ... While we strongly recommend keeping provenance enabled, you can disable it if needed. Set the `provenance` option to `false` in any of these ways: ... Using environment variable: ... NPM_CONFIG_PROVENANCE= false npm publish ... In your `.npmrc` file: ... provenance=false ... In your `package.json`: "publishConfig": { "provenance": false ... If you encounter an "Unable to authenticate" (ENEEDAUTH) error when publishing, first verify that the workflow filename matches exactly what you configured on npmjs.com, including the `.yml` extension. All fields are case-sensitive and must be exact. Also ensure you&`#39`;re using GitHub-hosted runners, GitLab.com shared runners, or CircleCI cloud, as self-hosted runners are not currently supported. For GitHub Actions specifically, check that the `id-token: write` permission is set in your workflow. For CircleCI, verify that your Organization ID, Project ID, and Pipeline definition ID match your CircleCI configuration. ... To publish from GitHub, your package&`#39`;s `repository.url` field in `package.json` must exactly match your GitHub repository. This may be an issue for misconfigured packages, but could also impact publication from forks that haven&`#39`;t updated `package.json` to match the forked repo. ... If your package has private dependencies and `npm install` or `npm ci` is failing with authentication errors, remember that trusted publishing only applies to the `npm publish` command. You&`#39`;ll still need to provide a read-only token for installing private packages as shown in the examples above. ... For packages in private repositories, provenance will not be generated even though you&`#39`;re using trusted publishing. This is a known limitation that applies regardless of whether your package itself is public or private. ... Some GitHub Actions workflows use `workflow_call` to invoke other workflows that run `npm publish`, or use `workflow_dispatch` for manual publishing. When this happens, validation checks the calling workflow&`#39`;s name instead of the workflow that actually contains the publish command, which can cause configuration mismatches. The `id-token: write` permission must also be given to both parent and child workflows. ... OIDC authentication supports the `npm publish` and `npm stage publish` commands. Other stage subcommands (`npm stage list`, `npm stage view`, `npm stage approve`, `npm stage reject`) require interactive authentication and cannot use OIDC tokens, as these actions require proof of presence and can only be performed via the CLI or npmjs.com. Other npm commands such as `install`, `view`, or `access` still require traditional authentication methods. The `npm whoami` command will not reflect OIDC authentication status since the authentication occurs only during the publish or stage operation. <title>[BUG] `npm publish --provenance` conflicts with the `repository.url` field of package.json · Issue `#8036` · npm/cli</title> GitHub issue 8036 in npm/cli (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference) # Issue: npm/cli `#8036` - Repository: npm/cli | the package manager for JavaScript | 10K stars | JavaScript ## [BUG] `npm publish --provenance` conflicts with the `repository.url` field of package.json - Author: [`@cloudcome`](https://github.com/cloudcome) - State: closed (completed) - Labels: Bug, Needs Triage - Reactions: 👍 1 - Created: 2025-01-16T13:45:50Z - Updated: 2025-01-24T08:59:30Z - Closed: 2025-01-24T08:59:29Z - Closed by: [`@cloudcome`](https://github.com/cloudcome) ### Is there an existing issue for this? I think this is a good tradeoff between speed of our everyday CI and testing everything before release. - nlf mentioned - nlf subscribed - …[truncated] <title>Comparing libnpmexec-v5.0.17...libnpmexec-v6.0.0 · npm/cli</title> https://github.com/npm/cli/compare/libnpmexec-v5.0.17...libnpmexec-v6.0.0 - bdab631: feat: expose provenance transparency url (`#6428`) (James Henry, 2023-05-05) ... - f064696: fix: Update publish /w provenance to ignore pkg vis 404 (`#6437`) (Philip Harrison, 2023-05-10) ... - a63a6d8: feat: add provenanceFile option for libnpmpublish (Brian DeHamer, 2023-05-22) ... 4 | - ... | workspaces/libnpmpublish/CHANGELOG.md | modified | +16 | -0 | | workspaces/libnpmpublish/README.md | modified | +11 | -0 | | workspaces/libnpmpublish/lib/provenance.js | modified | +45 | -0 | | workspaces/libnpmpublish/lib/publish.js | modified | +90 | -43 | | workspaces/libnpmpublish/package.json | modified | +2 | -1 | | workspaces/libnpmpublish/test/publish.js | modified | +253 | -2 | ... @@ -288,12 +292,20 @@ jobs: NPM_VERSION="$(node . --version)-$GITHUB_SHA.0" node . version $NPM_VERSION --ignore-scripts node scripts/publish.js --pack-destination=$RUNNER_TEMP ... - node . install --global $RUNNER_TEMP/npm-$NPM_VERSION.tgz + export SMOKE_PUBLISH_TARBALL="$RUNNER_TEMP/npm-$NPM_VERSION.tgz" + node . install --global $SMOKE_PUBLISH_TARBALL node . install -w smoke-tests --ignore-scripts --no-audit --no-fund ... - node scripts/remove-files.js # call installed npm instead of local source since we are testing # the packed tarball that we just installed globally - npm test -w smoke-tests --ignore-scripts ... + NPM_GLOBAL_VERSION="$(npm --version)" + npm help + if [ "$NPM_GLOBAL_VERSION" == "$NPM_VERSION" ]; then + npm test -w smoke-tests --ignore-scripts + else + echo "global npm is not the correct version for smoke-publish" + echo "found: $NPM_GLOBAL_VERSION, expected: $NPM_VERSION" + exit 1 + fi - name: Conclude Check uses: LouisBrunner/checks-action@v1.3 ... 1 if: steps.check.outputs.check_id && always() ... +* [`a63a6d8`](https://github.com/npm/cli/commit/a63a6d8d6fd339d504ab94c0364ce7ee3d4e3775) [`#6490`](https://github.com/npm/cli/pull/6490) add provenanceFile option for libnpmpublish (`@bdehamer`) ... +* [`2a8f4f2`](https://github.com/npm/cli/commit/2a8f4f203a47f60cc96312934927419a7d83c2f1) [`#6490`](https://github.com/npm/cli/pull/6490) add new exclusive config item publish-file (`@wraithgar`) ... * [Workspace](https://github.com/ ... /cli/releases/tag/config-v6.2.0): ... npmcli/config@6.2.0` +* [Workspace](https://github.com/npm/cli/releases/tag/libnpmexec-v6.0.0): `libnpmexec@6.0.0` +* [Workspace](https://github.com/npm/cli/releases/tag/libnpmpublish-v7.3.0): `libnpmpublish@7.3 ... +42 ... ; ... ublish--> ... arg; ... fetch; <title>feat: adds support for oidc publish (`#8336`) · 1cce318 · npm/cli</title> https://github.com/npm/cli/commit/1cce31810eb5ff1e0f7c8ee4516e7c73cedb38a1 + // ... checks if the user ... value + const ... Do not publish the tag from the main push with provenance enabled.

The push path builds v0.6.6 at 56a57fd823b4815a0774e9436a74e16dd97e4494, but npm provenance uses the triggering workflow's GITHUB_SHA and GITHUB_REF. The attestation can therefore identify the main push commit and refs/heads/main, not the validated tag commit. This can produce incorrect provenance or cause the registry to reject the publication.

Limit the fallback to the intended missing-entry case.

This condition also catches an unreadable CHANGELOG.md or another extractor error. If the release-notes file exists, the job then proceeds to publication instead of reporting that failure. The tagged extractor uses the same nonzero exit for a missing entry and a read error. Restrict this fallback to the approved 0.6.6 recovery and distinguish a missing entry from other failures.
