Summary

The TreeView.entity-card-tree TreeViewItem ControlTemplate in SharedStyles.axaml directly binds its chrome elements — outer-border visibility, expand/collapse button content and command, child-rail accent brush, and child ItemsPresenter visibility — to the item's data-context view-model via {Binding ExpandArrow} and {Binding ChildRailBrush}. These bindings assume a concrete view-model shape that is only satisfied by ViewEntityViewModel. AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel — used by AgentChatEditorControl and AgentChatToolsDetailControl — does not expose either property, so both bindings silently fail at runtime (x:CompileBindings="False" on SharedStyles.axaml suppresses errors). The expand/collapse button shows no glyph and the child-rail accent line is invisible in every agent-editor tree view.

The secondary issue is that the expander button is rendered inside the card border, causing it to appear at the bottom of the rounded-corner border area rather than as a separate footer element below the card.

Design / Fix

Reusable Style in SharedStyles.axaml

The fix must not implement a one-off ControlTemplate scoped only to the entity view tree. Instead, define the TreeViewItem ControlTemplate as a reusable Style in SharedStyles.axaml — the single source of truth for all TreeView controls in the application.

Two naming options (either is acceptable; implicit style is preferred for simplicity):

  1. Implicit style (recommended): <Style TargetType="TreeViewItem"> — automatically applies to every TreeViewItem in any TreeView that inherits from SharedStyles.axaml.
  2. Named style: <Style x:Key="PhantomTreeViewItemStyle" TargetType="TreeViewItem"> — must be explicitly referenced on each TreeView via ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource PhantomTreeViewItemStyle}".

The style targets TreeViewItem and contains the ControlTemplate described below. Because FallbackValue is specified on every view-model binding that may be absent, the same style works correctly for all TreeView controls in the codebase — including the agent chat editor navigation trees — with no view-model changes required.

Correct expander layout

The expander button must not live inside the card border. The broken rendering — a tiny triangle appearing at the bottom inside the rounded card — happens because the button is placed as a child of the card Border element, where it has no correct sizing or positioning context.

The correct structure for the TreeViewItem ControlTemplate is an outer Grid with two rows and two columns:

  • Row 0 — the entity card StackPanel (card border + expander button), spanning both columns via Grid.ColumnSpan="2". The parent card is full-width.
  • Row 1 — the children row. Column 0 holds the accent rail; column 1 holds the ItemsPresenter.
  • Column 0 (width 20) — indent/rail column. The accent rail Border sits here in row 1 only (no RowSpan), appearing as a vertical line alongside the children.
  • Column 1 (width *) — content column. The ItemsPresenter sits here in row 1, indented to the right of the rail.

Because the rail has no RowSpan and no IsVisible binding, it is always present in row 1. When IsExpanded is false, the ItemsPresenter is hidden and row 1 collapses to zero height, so the rail is also effectively invisible. Each child TreeViewItem repeats this template recursively, providing cumulative indentation per nesting level.

Part 1 — Fix ChildRailBrush and ExpandArrow bindings with FallbackValue

No new interface or view-model changes are needed. Instead, add FallbackValue to the two bindings in SharedStyles.axaml that fail on AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel:

Avalonia's binding system silently uses the FallbackValue when the data-context does not expose the property. No changes to AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel or any other view-model are required. This means the same style works for all five <TreeView> controls in the codebase without any per-tree customisation.

Part 2 — Restructure the ControlTemplate

Replace the current ControlTemplate with the layout described above. Key rules:

  • Rail Border is in Grid.Column="0" Grid.Row="1" — no RowSpan, no IsVisible binding
  • Card StackPanel has Grid.ColumnSpan="2" in row 0 — full width
  • ItemsPresenter is in Grid.Column="1" Grid.Row="1" — indented by the rail column
  • Expander Button is a sibling of the card Border inside the StackPanel, not a child of the card Border

Corner radius switching: Use a DataTrigger or Classes-based style on the card Border to switch between CornerRadius="8" (no children) and CornerRadius="8,8,0,0" (has children, expander visible).

Column 0 is 2 px wide; ItemsPresenter in column 1 adds a further 18 px left margin — total indent 20 px. The visual centre of the indent zone is at x = 10 but the ChildRailBrush border fills x = 0..2. Proposed geometry fix: widen column 0 to 20 px, set Width="2" and HorizontalAlignment="Center" on the rail Border, and remove Margin="18,0,0,0" from ItemsPresenter.

Bug 2 — Binding failures for AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel

Superseded by the FallbackValue fix in the Design / Fix section above. The prior diagnosis correctly identified the missing ExpandArrow and ChildRailBrush properties; the fix resolves this through binding fallbacks in SharedStyles.axaml rather than view-model changes.

    Design

    Root cause: the shared TreeView.entity-card-tree TreeViewItem template binds chrome to optional view-model properties and places the child rail at the left edge of a narrow column. I will keep the shared template, restructure it into a two-row/two-column grid, center the child rail in a 20px indent column, put children in column 1, and add fallback values for ExpandArrow and ChildRailBrush so agent navigation view models bind correctly. Files: Phantom.Workspaces.Gui.Shared\Styles\SharedStyles.axaml, Phantom.Workspaces.Agent.Gui.Tests\MainWindowAxamlTests.cs.

    Design

    Root cause: Two related bugs in SharedStyles.axaml TreeView.entity-card-tree TreeViewItem ControlTemplate:

    1. The child rail indent column is 2 px wide and the ItemsPresenter has Margin="18,0,0,0" — total visual indent is 20 px but the 2 px rail border fills x=0..2, not centered in the indent zone.
    2. Content="{Binding ExpandArrow}" and Background="{Binding ChildRailBrush}" have no FallbackValue, so AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel (which lacks both properties) silently produces a blank expander glyph and invisible rail.

    Approach:

    • Restructure the ControlTemplate root from a flat StackPanel to a two-row × two-column Grid (rows Auto/Auto, columns 20px/*).
    • Move the card StackPanel to row 0 with Grid.ColumnSpan="2" and add VerticalAlignment="Top" to both ContentPresenters.
    • Move the rail Border to Grid.Column="0" Grid.Row="1" with Width="2" HorizontalAlignment="Center" and add FallbackValue=#808080 to the ChildRailBrush binding.
    • Move ItemsPresenter to Grid.Column="1" Grid.Row="1" (no Margin needed).
    • Add FallbackValue=▼ to the ExpandArrow binding on the expander Button.
    • Add test SharedStyles_EntityCardTreeControlTemplate_CentersChildRailInIndentColumn.

    Design

    Root cause: the shared TreeViewItem chrome still depends on navigation-item properties that the agent editor view-model does not fully expose, and the child rail is positioned by an even-width indent column that leaves the 2 px rail visually between pixels. I will make the agent navigation item satisfy the template contract (ExpandArrow and rail brush) and adjust the shared template to place the 2 px rail in an odd-width indent column so it is visually centered while children remain indented.

    Alternatives considered: duplicating the full tree template in the agent editor would avoid shared bindings but risks future drift. Keeping only binding fallback values hides binding errors but does not repair the agent editor contract.

    Files expected to change: SharedStyles.axaml, AgentEditorNavigationItemViewModel.cs, and focused AXAML/view-model tests.
