I checked https://github.com/frescobaldi/python-ly but it serves a different purpose (changing lilypond files themselves).

Only option I see is having people set up lilypond themselves and we change the documentation accordingly. And also remove the [music-notation] optional dependency probably.

Extra info was added in 79e3c39 wrt. Apple Silicon. So don't block release of 0.3.0 over this, but maybe release 0.3.1, once new LilyPond wheels are released.
