| **J5:** when `J5CODE_SERVER_NAME` is set and not blank, it is the server's name. Unset or blank, the server names itself as upstream's does. | ||

| **Why:** in a two-server peering test on one host both servers were `openclaw`, so neither agents nor people could tell which participant lived on which server. Giving the second server its own hostname namespace was rejected: the process looks like root inside one, which provider CLIs and the browser sandbox may react to. |

We need agents to be able to reliably test these scenarios. |
…e told apart A server names itself after its machine, so two servers on one host both report the same name and a peering test cannot tell them apart. When J5CODE_SERVER_NAME is set and not blank, it is the server's name; unset or blank behaves as before. Closes #545 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
Two J5 servers on one machine report the same name, because a server names itself after its host (friendly name, then hostname, then the cwd base name) and nothing overrides that. In a two-server peering test both were
openclaw, so neither agents nor people could tell which participant lived on which server. Closes #545 (part of #546).What changed
When
J5CODE_SERVER_NAMEis set and not blank, it is the server's name, ahead of the friendly-name and hostname lookups. Unset, blank or whitespace-only behaves as before.J5CODE_because the variable is J5's own, likeJ5CODE_TELEMETRY_TAG(FORK.md case 63); theT3CODE_*names are upstream's settings that J5 left alone (case 25). "Server name" because that is what agents and people see it as (theserverfield, "peer server").Config, the wayAnalyticsService.tsandBitbucketApi.tsread theirs, in J5-ownedapps/server/src/j5/serverName.ts. No rawprocess.env.normalizeLabel, so the value is trimmed and a blank one falls through.resolveServerEnvironmentLabel.Where the name is consumed
Everything reads the one descriptor built in
ServerEnvironment.ts(descriptor.label), so the override reaches all of them:/.well-known/t3/environmentand the server config a client gets over the WebSocket, which is what Connections settings and the peering dialog show.PeerRegistryService.selfLabel, which is the name this server sends a peer in its hello (PeerHttp.ts), in each poll (PeerPoller.ts) and to a store peer (PeerStoreService.ts). The peer records it and shows it as theserverof this server's participants inj5_list_participants. A peer that already recorded the old name picks up the new one on the next hello or poll.Three places read the hostname by another route. None is the server's name, and none is changed:
apps/server/src/usage/UsageService.tsusesos.hostname()as the usagehostId. That identifies the machine whose provider usage files were scanned, so two servers on one host sharing it is right.apps/server/src/environment/RemoteOpenTargets.tsuses the hostname to build SSH targets for "open in editor".apps/desktop/src/preview/BrowserImport/Sources.tsuses it to recognise this machine's browser profiles.Live check
Three servers from this worktree, each with its own base dir under
.j5code/, on 127.0.0.1. The first two set the variable; the third leaves it unset. Responses are cut afterplatform. Not checked live: the name as a peer shows it (dialog, Connections settings,
j5_list_participants). That was read from the code above; no browser or agent turn was run.Not in this PR
docs/user/j5-peering.md, as a short note for people who run two servers on one machine. Left for a follow-up.AGENTS.mdrule 3 lists the variables to unset for a dev server and could gain this one; not changed here.Upstream impact
This changes what upstream's server does. Jackson approved the upstream edit on 2026-10-11 (#545). Register entry: D32 in
docs/j5/product/upstream.md. Give-back candidate recorded on #276.apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironmentLabel.ts: FORK.md case 67 (one import, one early return).apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironmentLabel.test.ts: FORK.md case 67. Two new tests, and an empty config provider for every test in the file throughwithHostPlatform, so aJ5CODE_SERVER_NAMEinherited from the server running the agent cannot change their results.Checklist
FORK.md(case text and file-table row) in this PRdocs/j5/product/upstream.mdAGENTS.md) — server-only; every client and peer reads the same descriptor, no contract change, and unsetting the variable is the way backdocs/j5/product/and user docs rewritten where this changes them — register entry added; the user doc note is left for a follow-up (see above)Verified with
vp test run apps/server/src/environment/ServerEnvironmentLabel.test.ts(10 passed),tsc --noEmitinapps/server, and lint and format on the touched files. The full suite is left to CI.Claude Opus 5.5, in J5 Code through the Claude Code harness.
