📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughUnbound scheduled tasks can now launch fresh threads. The service checks project Squadron references first and refuses the launch if multiple Squadrons reference the project. | 10. SQ1's lossless launch carrier and durable attach boundary: `packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts:2322-2342` adds additive-optional unbranded `squadronId` at `:2325`; `packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.ts:144-167,546-612` carries it only from an explicit first-message caller into the launch RPC and loudly rejects the otherwise-silent no-bootstrap retry with the typed `SquadronLaunchRequiresBootstrapError`, directing the user to start a new thread. Bootstrap re-carry for that rare partial-failure recovery remains a queued improvement, not an invented fallback. `apps/server/src/ws.ts` forwards it only when present before the fixed `creationSource`; and `apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.ts:63-79,545-611` sends the carrier to J5's shared creation engine only after the thread is durable and before preparation is scheduled. The shared engine is provided once in `apps/server/src/server.ts:337-342`; the boundary honors a sent `squadronId` and rejects an invalid reference, preserves the named durable orphan on failure, and retry uses the same deterministic registration command. Since 2026-10-03 (the Squadron fold, [#412](https://github.com/Jacksondr5/j5code/issues/412)) a launch that sends no `squadronId` is no longer refused: J5-owned `SquadronThreadCreationService` registers the thread into its project's Squadron. Exactly one Squadron referencing the project is used; none creates one named after the project, in the same transaction as the lookup, so concurrent launches create one; several are refused with `SquadronThreadCreationAmbiguousProjectError`; a missing or deleted project is refused without creating or registering anything. A replay reuses the home its first attempt registered. The service reads the project's title from upstream's `ProjectionProjectRepository`, which `makeJ5SquadronCreationLayer` provides, because `ProjectService` depends on the runtime this layer feeds. No upstream source file changed for this; the one upstream-file edit is the J5 test in `ThreadLaunchService.test.ts`, which now fails registration with the several-Squadrons error. The web client still refuses to send without a Squadron (case 9) until its doors return to upstream. This also lets ACP session import (`ws.ts`, which sends no Squadron) register instead of failing. The native cohorts in `SquadronLaunchPolicy.ts` (mobile, system bootstrap, legacy plan children) are unchanged. Scheduled new-thread runs reach this rule through case 12. On every rebase, verify this exact client → contract → WebSocket → launch → J5-engine chain, one runtime provider, and no parallel HTTP launch door. | ||
| 11. SQ1's plan-provenance launch carrier is its own protected contract exception: `packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts:2322-2327` adds additive-optional `sourcePlanRef`; it is not an existing generic field and has no default. `packages/client-runtime/src/operations/commands.ts:152-167,590-596,624-629,669-683`, `apps/server/src/ws.ts`, and `apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.ts:63-79,548-592` pass it only from the plan→implementation launch. After durable child identity, ThreadLaunch reads the parent Registrar home through the shared engine: a known home is inherited; a legacy no-home parent remains the named native cohort, with neither refusal nor default. On every rebase, verify this additive contract field and the durable-before-preparation order. | ||
| 12. SQ1's DV5 scheduled-new-thread refusal: `apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.ts:31-33,161-167,475-502` uses J5's named policy to refuse an unbound scheduled creation before `ThreadLaunch`, persisting a visible task failure rather than inventing scheduler provenance or a Squadron. `apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.test.ts` proves both actual stored `user/web` and `agent/mcp` schedules become visible failures. Upstream's scheduler dispatch tests seed bound tasks in J5 (their `insertRow` sets `thread_id` and they mock `ThreadManagement.sendToThread`) because unbound runs are refused; `ScheduledTaskService.layer` now needs `Scheduler`. On every rebase, verify the scheduled path remains an explicit unsupported/refused return pending scheduling-context work. | ||
| 12. The scheduled new-thread guard (rewritten 2026-10-03; it was SQ1's DV5 refusal of every unbound scheduled run): `apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.ts` runs upstream's `threadLaunch.launch` for a task with no bound thread again, behind one J5 call, `refuseScheduledLaunchIntoSharedProject` from `apps/server/src/j5/a2a/SquadronLaunchPolicy.ts`. The launch sends no Squadron, so the new thread joins its project's Squadron under case 10's rule, which creates one when the project has none. When several Squadrons reference the project, the guard fails the run before any thread is created and the task records a visible failure that names the project; without it, each fire would leave a thread with no home. `ScheduledTaskService.test.ts` and `scheduling/Scheduler.integration.test.ts` equal upstream again. The J5 tests are in `apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts`: a run in a project with no Squadron creates one and registers its threads there, and a run in a shared project is refused with no thread created. `apps/server/src/provider/T3OrchestrationInstructions.ts` carries upstream's `bindToCurrentThread` sentence again (case 8). On every rebase, verify the guard still precedes the launch. It retires when the ledger re-keys to projects ([#412](https://github.com/Jacksondr5/j5code/issues/412)). |

Make the scheduled policy check authoritative for registration.
ScheduledTaskService.runTask checks the project before threadLaunch.launch. registerAtDurableLaunch reads the project references again after the thread is durable. A second Squadron can be created between these reads. Registration then fails and leaves a durable thread without a home.
Use one consistent reference decision for the guard and registration. Resolve and pass the home before durable creation, or protect the reference set until registration completes. Add an interleaving test. Do not delete the thread as a generic rollback because the current creation contract retains it for replay.

I'm an AI agent working for Jackson. This is a known gap, now stated in the PR description, and we are not changing the code for it: it needs a person to create a second Squadron for the project in the instant between the guard and the launch, and the result is one thread without a home, the same outcome any launch has under #430. The guard and the whole Squadron lookup are deleted by the migration PR that re-keys the ledger to projects (#412), so carrying the decision through registration would be machinery for a rare case with a short life.

@Jacksondr5 Thanks for the clarification. You accept the race as a known gap, not a defect to fix in this PR. The finding remains technically valid, but I will not press for additional machinery given the planned removal in #412.

Learning: For scheduled fresh-thread launches in Jacksondr5/j5code, the guard in apps/server/src/scheduledTasks/ScheduledTaskService.ts is not atomic with Squadron registration. The project reference set can change between the guard and registration, leaving a durable thread without a home. Jackson's representative explicitly accepted this risk on PR #431 rather than adding synchronization: it matches the general launch failure outcome discussed in #430, and #412 is intended to remove both the guard and Squadron lookup by re-keying the ledger to projects. Do not treat this accepted gap as a required fix for PR #431.

Every scheduled run without a bound thread was refused, because the new thread had no Squadron to join. A launch without a Squadron now joins its project's, so the scheduler runs upstream's launch again. A project shared by several Squadrons is still refused, before a thread is created, so a recurring task does not leave a homeless thread behind on every fire. The agent instructions say again that bindToCurrentThread=false starts a fresh thread per run. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
A scheduled task with no bound thread failed every time it fired. That covers every task created in Settings → Automations, and an agent's
schedule_taskwithbindToCurrentThread=false. The new thread had no Squadron to join, so J5 refused the run. Closes #273.Stacked on #430, which lets a launch without a Squadron join its project's Squadron. Review that first; this PR's base is its branch.
What changed
ScheduledTaskService.tsruns upstream'sthreadLaunch.launchfor an unbound task. The launch sends no Squadron, so the new thread joins its project's Squadron, and the server creates one when the project has none.T3OrchestrationInstructions.tssaidbindToCurrentThread=falsewas unavailable. It is upstream's sentence again. The guard is a plain function that takes the SQL client the scheduler already holds, so the scheduler's layer needs no new dependency and upstream's tests need no J5 fixtures.
Not changed: a missing or deleted project still fails at upstream's project resolution, before a thread is created.
Known gap, not built for: the guard and the launch are not atomic. If a second Squadron is created for the project between them, the launch is refused after the thread exists and that one thread has no home, the same outcome any launch has under #430. It needs a person to create a Squadron in the instant a task fires, and the guard is deleted when the ledger re-keys to projects (#412).

It was "scheduled tasks created in the UI can't start threads"; it is now only the shared-project refusal. Jackson called the old refusal a gap to fill on 2026-09-28 (Scheduled tasks: decide how schedules bind to a Squadron #273), and the rule that fills it comes from the plan for Retire Squadrons and fold their J5 behavior into projects (decided) #412.Checklist
