Summary

The version of the CRTM used by the operational GFS (v16.3.26 and beyond) is not CRTMv2.4.0.2. This is identical to CRTMv2.4.0.1 (so the same hash should be used) but has additional coefficient files, of which the GOES-19 ABI is used in operations.

The revised fix file directory on WCOSS2 is /apps/ops/prod/libs/intel/19.1.3.304/crtm/2.4.0.2/fix which is a subset of the latest release: https://bin.ssec.wisc.edu/pub/s4/CRTM/file/fix_REL-3.1.1.3.tgz md5sum: 3cb70629fb9e3dcaa30a40289141425a

Is it possible to add these additional coefficient files to the spack stack?

Hi Andrew, just to clarify:

• Is the idea essentially to use crtm@2.4.0.1 with version 3.1.1.3 of the fix files? I still get confused by the crtm version numbers...
• Which system(s) would you like these on and what is the urgency in terms of timeframe? If this is a request to add them to the NCO spack-stack test installation on WCOSS2 then process will be a bit different.

Yes, the versioning is complicated as NCO insist on a new version number every time we add new coefficients.

But yes, v3.1.1.3 of the fix files should be correct.

The primary driver for this is the GFSv17 parallels which may start as early as October 1st.

Confirming @ADCollard's comment that we need the new CRTM coefficient files for the GFSv17 retrospectives. We currently plan to run these experiments on WCOSS2 and Gaea-C6. Support for running GFSv17 on other machines will be needed as well (MSU, Ursa in particular) but the timeline is not as urgent on those machines.

So, we can only install the fix files from v3.1.1.3 on each platform, and GSI loads the crtm and crtm_fix separately. That also prevent any messy up the installations.

@Hang-Lei-NOAA and @AlexanderRichert-NOAA : Does crtm-fix/3.1.1.3 currently exist on any NOAA RDHPCS machine?

A retrospective parallel failed this weekend because it reached 2025040712. This is when the GDA contains abi_g19 data. Neither crtm-fix/2.4.0.1_emc nor crtm-fix/3.1.1.2 contain abi_g19 coefficients. Hence, gsi.x aborted.

@Hang-Lei-NOAA If I understand your comment correctly, I think this is the best solution right now. Only load the latest CRTM coefficient directory.
