no opt out option?

I can't seem to find a way for a player to just... opt out of automatic lwc protections.

I don't want every single chest or shulker or hopper I place to automatically be protected/locked. 
I want to be able to selectively protect items without having to constantly un-protect EVERYTHING ELSE I place.
frankly it's obnoxious and just plain stupid.
