Would like reference to gemstone server location in Rowan installation

It would be nice if the installation instructions included

• the name of the GemStone server
• the name of the netldi
• the path to the actual GemStone installation directory.

The netldi port number would help as well.

Ah ... well there is a shell variable rowan_stone_name in the script already.

The netldi is named by tacking _ldi to the stone name.

The stone directory is in $GS_HOME/server/stones/<stone-name> and the GemStone product tree can be reached by $GS_HOME/server/stones/<stone-name>/product

$GS_HOME/bin/stones produces a gslist for the machines along with the list of installed stones in your $GS_HOME...

This is more of a nice to have. I was able to dig around and find what you showed me before I reported the issue. However, it would have saved time if the there were a few notes at the end of the installation showing where one could find the product directory and what the server, ldi name, and ldi port was. That’s all. ah ... that's right you are not familiar with GsDevKit_home ... if I put my answers in the README will that work for you?

When I click on the readme, it appears to take me to the same instructions. But I'm

So, I think putting those names in the readme will be helpful.

Yes, the README is automatically displayed on the projet page, so it serves as the entry point for documentation of the project ... github will display a README file automatically for every directory that you have again to provide documentation for the structure ... so yes the README at the top-level of the project is produced by editting the REAME.md file at the top-level of the directory structure ... they not only appear identical, they are identical ...

I've been using github for 5 years and forget that not everyone is familiar with github ... the same goes for GsDevKit_home ... BTW it is very useful to get this kind of feedback from a newbie to both github and gsdevkit_home, because it does remind me about the type of documentation folks need

A couple comments:

$GS_HOME/stones
-bash: /foos2/users/ewinger/GsDevKit_home/stones: No such file or directory

getent services | grep test_rowan_340_ldi
This doesn't find the port number. I need the port number because
I'll be coming from windows. The windows services file doesn't
know about test_rowan_340.

And one new issue:

I tried to avoid the netldi issue for the moment by using 44564 however that
gives me this error when I try to login against test_rowan_340 on foos.

"Error opening Repository, could not open extent 0, failed with ... Authorization failure"

In looking in the data directory, I don't see an extent. That tells me your Rowan extent
is somewhere else. Unfortunately, Jade doesn't seem to give me options to point to an extent
in a different location than data. (presumably)

Okay I guess that really isn't a new issue... anyway 44564 is the port for rowan_340_ldi but the netldi for the stone you created is
test_rowan_340_ldi on port 38979 ... the extents are located in $GS_HOME/server/stones//extents ... so the stone directory is where all of the action is ... the product directory is expected to be shared between multiple stones, so all of the stone data is in a completely separate directory...

I think we might be done here ... most of these issues are actually GsDevKit_home issues so opened issue against GsDevKit_home
