• numbers ABCs can be instantiated: numbers.Complex(), numbers.Real() and an empty Integral subclass build objects

• for-loop unpack errors are attributed to the iterable, CPython attributes them to the target

• An undefined bare-name decorator inside a function is a compile error, not a NameError

• zoneinfo knows only UTC, but CPython's pure-Python zoneinfo runs on Grail against the host's or GemStone's tz database

  GemTalk/Grail#1453 · Filter by author je-foster opened on Oct 11, 2026

• A def's default is evaluated late: a module-level def's on its first call, a class-body method's at the end of the class body (CPython's zoneinfo._tzpath fails)

• Constants built on every read: datetime.max is datetime.max is False (16 class and module constants); decide where a Smalltalk-defined constant lives

• datetime arithmetic builds each result through the Python subclass-construction path: dt ± timedelta, replace(), combine() and fromordinal() cost 5–12 µs (CPython ~0.03)

• werkzeug.utils is a stub: header_property and environ_property aren't descriptors, so request.referrer and response.location don't work

  GemTalk/Grail#1447 · Filter by author je-foster opened on Oct 11, 2026

• datetime is not a subclass of date: isinstance(dt, date) is False, so Werkzeug's http_date fails and a permanent Flask session answers 500

• Jinja autoescape costs ~120 µs per {{ }}, url_for ~0.9 ms: markupsafe.Markup() resolves super().__new__ twice, uncached, on every call

• Calling a bound method costs ~0.55 µs: the receiver's module instance is looked up again on every call

• Attribute stores off the self.x = v fast path cost 0.6–3 µs, and every store to a deployed class's instance looks up a data descriptor and the class-attribute overlay

GemTalk/Grail#1440 · Filter by author jgfoster opened on Oct 11, 2026

• Reading a method without calling it ('self.m', 'o.m') costs ~5 µs: each read walks the class and metaclass chains before building the BoundMethod
