an absolute directory outside the current workspace: define how root.path is
established so workspace-scoped detection and tool paths remain anchored
correctly, or restrict such selections when the workspace root is ambiguous.

- Around line 23-24: Update the nested-workspace requirements to explicitly
define whether a nested valid ai/openspec starts a separate workspace; if it
does, scope the same-planning-data requirement to invocations within that
workspace, otherwise specify how OpenSpec consistently selects one workspace
root.
- Around line 35-37: Add an explicit normative scenario alongside the
parent-traversal case stating that when OPENSPEC_DIR resolves through a symlink
to a canonical path outside the workspace candidate, an OpenSpec command must
fail before reading or writing project data.

Status
Ready for design review. This proposal changes no runtime behavior.
Why
Teams sometimes need OpenSpec planning files under an existing project hierarchy, such as
ai/openspec/. Today, normal projects must keep them in a root-levelopenspec/directory.What it proposes
Set one workspace-relative environment variable:
--storeand a custom project directory cannot be combined. This adds no YAML pointer, directory scan, store workaround, or independently configurable subpaths.
Proof
Strict OpenSpec validation and the full Linux, macOS, Windows, lint, type, and security checks pass.
Next step
Approve this contract, then implement it in a focused follow-up PR with
Closes #697.AI disclosure: drafted with Codex and checked against the current root-selection and store implementation.
