fix(schema): validate the apply block against declared artifacts - #1868
Conversation
parseSchema checked each artifact's requires but never the apply block, so schema validate passed a schema whose apply.requires named an artifact that does not exist or whose apply.tracks named a file no artifact generates. At run time apply skipped the unknown id, turning the apply gate off, or blocked forever on a tracked file nothing produces. Reject both in parseSchema, naming the bad value and what the schema declares. tracks is compared to generates by exact string, the same comparison the tracked-tasks lookups use, so any schema that parses is one they can resolve.

…racks apply.tracks is a path that apply reads as written, not an artifact id. A schema that tracks a hand-written TODO.md, or one file under a glob generates such as tasks/main.md, loads and applies correctly on main. Rejecting it in parseSchema made every command on that schema fail. Keep the unknown apply.requires id as a load error, the same as an unknown artifact requires. Report an apply.tracks path that matches no artifact's generates as a warning from `openspec schema validate`, which still exits 0. Move the docs note from legacy docs/customization.md into docs-lab (schema-yaml.md validation section, cli.md schema validate). The schema-yaml.md table had said unknown apply.requires IDs go unreported. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The new warning checks exact string equality between apply.tracks and artifact.generates, but its diagnostic and both docs pages say the tracked file is not generated by any artifact. That is false for the supported case tracks: tasks/main.md with generates: tasks/*.md, which this PR deliberately warns about. Please describe the actual issue as the tracks value not exactly matching any generates value, or equivalent progress-discovery wording, in the diagnostic and docs. @TabishB remains requested for final docs review.
…generated The apply.tracks check compares `tracks` to each artifact's `generates` with exact string equality, but its warning said the tracked file "is not generated by any artifact". That is false for the case this PR deliberately supports: `tracks: tasks/main.md` under `generates: tasks/*.md`, where the glob really does generate the file and only the strings differ. The diagnostic now names the real condition (the `tracks` value does not exactly match any `generates` value, so OpenSpec cannot tell which artifact's progress it tracks) and keeps both remedies. Both docs-lab pages, the changeset and the JSDoc that repeated the claim are corrected the same way, and a new CLI test pins that the glob case is described as a mismatch and never as ungenerated. The wording fix at ac73580 addresses my earlier concern, and the docs-lab wording now matches the exact-string behavior. One required test gap remains: test/AGENTS.md says path-behavior changes must add coverage that would fail on Windows path separators. Add a Windows-form apply.tracks/generates case that pins the intended exact-match or warning behavior. @TabishB remains needed for final docs-lab review.
The tracked-tasks lookup compares apply.tracks and generates as plain strings, so a backslash on one side and a forward slash on the other must warn, and the same backslash spelling on both sides must not. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Reviewed current head 1fe48ca. The earlier blockers are resolved: the warning now describes the exact-string progress-discovery mismatch accurately, and Windows path-separator behavior is covered. The implementation, tests, changeset, and docs are consistent, and CI is green. Approving. @TabishB remains required for final docs-lab review.
Closes #1867.
Why
parseSchemachecks every artifact'srequires, cycles and duplicate ids, butnever the
applyblock.openspec schema validatetherefore passes a schemawhose
apply.requiresnames an artifact that does not exist, or whoseapply.tracksvalue matches no artifact'sgeneratesvalue. The comment atsrc/commands/schema.ts:230-231claims otherwise: "Dependency graph validationis already done by parseSchema (it throws on cycles and invalid references)".
Nothing reports the typo at run time either, and both outcomes are silent:
apply.requires: [desgin]turns the apply gate off. The missing-artifactcheck in
instructions.tsrunsif (artifact && ...), so an unknown id countsas present. With only
proposal.mdwritten, apply reportsstate: readyandtells the agent "All required artifacts complete. Proceed with
implementation."
apply.tracks: task.mdblocks apply for good. Apply waits for a filenothing writes.

instructions applyreads it as written(
resolveArtifactOutputPath(changeDir, tracks)), and docs-lab documents it as arelative path to a task file. Schemas whose
tracksvalue matches nogeneratesvalue load and apply correctly on
main. Two examples: a hand-writtenTODO.md,and
tracks: tasks/main.mdundergenerates: tasks/*.md, where the glob reallydoes generate the tracked file and only the strings differ. Only
list/statusprogress is affected, because the tracked-tasks lookup in
task-progress.tsselects the artifact whose
generatesstring equalstracks. BecauseparseSchemaruns on every schema load, a load error would disable every commandfor those schemas. The warning still catches the
task.mdtypo from #1867.Wording of the warning. The check is exact string equality, so the diagnostic
describes a progress-discovery mismatch rather than claiming that nothing
generates the file. That keeps one message accurate for both supported cases: a
typo such as
task.md, which nothing generates, andtasks/main.mdunder a globgenerates, which is generated but does not match the string. No defensive change in
instructions.ts. Every schema load goes throughparseSchema:loadSchema, the resolver, schema validateandschema fork. The resolver wraps the error as
