fix(bulk-archive): check the archive target before moving changeRoot - #1829
Conversation
Step 8c ran `mv` with no existence check. POSIX `mv` moves changeRoot inside an existing target directory and exits 0, so a same-day name collision produced archive/<target>/<target>/ and was recorded as a successful archive. The workflow already promised the opposite in three places: the guardrail "If archive target exists, fail that change but continue with others" and both failure output templates listing "Archive directory already exists". The single-change archive workflow implements the check; the bulk path did not. Closes Fission-AI#1827

Reviewed and verified independently — this looks right to me. The bulk path was the only one missing the guard; I confirmed the tests aren't vacuous: reverting the template guard fails 2 of the 3, exactly as you described. On your open question about the 2 local failures — CI is green across linux/macos/windows, so there's nothing to dig into. For what it's worth I saw a different pair fail locally ( Note: your fork's CI had never run — both workflows sat at For maintainers: #1796 fixes the same bug structurally, by delegating the move to |
The existence check at the move ran after step 8a had already synced the change's delta specs, so a collision still left main specs rewritten for a change that stayed active. `openspec archive` settles the destination before touching any spec; the batch now does the same in step 3 (including two selected changes that resolve to the same target), keeps blocked changes out of sync, conflict resolution, and the archive-everything option, and re-checks just before the move. One data-integrity blocker remains. Step 3d computes and checks each dated archive target, but step 8c recomputes the target name. If a batch crosses midnight, preflight can validate yesterday’s target, then sync main specs before step 8 discovers a collision at today’s target, leaving main specs changed while the change remains active. Persist each change’s computed target during step 3d and reuse that exact value for the late collision check and mv on both generated surfaces and the committed skill; add coverage pinning the reuse. The branch is also currently merge-conflicting and will need resolution before approval.
Merges main (parity-hash conflict resolved by regeneration). Step 8c recomputed the dated target name, so a batch that crossed midnight checked yesterday's target in step 3, synced main specs, then collided at today's target with the change still active. Step 3d now computes and records each change's <target-name> once; step 8c reuses it unchanged for the late check and the move. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

@alfred-openspec Addressed in da066e2. The target name is now worked out once in step 3d, and step 8c reuses it unchanged. Before this, a batch running past midnight could check one date and then move to another. Both generated surfaces and the committed skill are updated, and a new test ( |

The last target check and `mv` are separate steps, so a target created in between still nested the change with exit 0. Step 8c now confirms the move did not land inside the target and moves the change back, recording `Archive directory already exists`, instead of reporting success. The ready-only option recorded every non-Ready change as Skipped, which misreported archive collisions; Blocked changes now stay Failed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-reviewed current head f2831cc. The earlier data-integrity blocker is resolved: step 3 records each dated target once, step 8 reuses it unchanged, blocked changes remain Failed in every confirmation path, and a late nested move is restored instead of reported as success. The committed skill and both generated surfaces stay in parity. Focused validation: 36 tests passed, plus typecheck and lint; CodeRabbit threads are resolved. Approving.
Keep this branch's step 3 guardrail alongside Fission-AI#1775's profile-aware sync handoff, and regenerate the parity hashes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-reviewed current head 1e5394a after its merge from main. The merge preserves the persisted archive target, blocked-state handling, and late-move recovery, while integrating the profile-aware sync handoff. No unresolved review threads remain and all required checks pass. Approving.

The first version checked the target at step 8c, which runs after step 8a has already synced the change's delta specs. A collision still left main specs rewritten while the change stayed active.
openspec archiveavoids this by checking the target before it touches any spec (src/core/archive.ts, "Settle the archive destination BEFORE touching any spec"). The batch now works the same way:add-authand2026-09-16-add-auth), mark those changesBlocked.mv, in case the target was created mid-batch.
