The Echo logs diagnostic step in the notebooks job runs a bare cat of $HOME/.cache/activitywatch/log/aw-server-rust/* under bash -e. The nightly no longer always writes to that path, so the glob doesn't expand, cat exits nonzero, and the whole notebooks job fails — a red check on every PR (e.g. #33) even though the notebook conversion itself succeeds.

Fix

Redirect stderr and append || true so the purely diagnostic step never fails the build:

cat $HOME/.cache/activitywatch/log/aw-server-rust/* 2>/dev/null || true

Logs are still dumped when present; a missing glob is now a no-op.

Evidence

Failing step on #33's run: cat: '/home/runner/.cache/activitywatch/log/aw-server-rust/*': No such file or directory → Process completed with exit code 1. Every other check (tests, typecheck, notebook conversion) is green.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The 'Echo logs' diagnostic step ran a bare 'cat' of a log glob under
'bash -e'. The nightly no longer always writes to that path, so a missing
glob returns nonzero and fails the whole notebooks job (a red check on
every PR, e.g. ErikBjare#33) despite the notebook conversion succeeding.

Redirect stderr and '|| true' so the diagnostic never fails the build.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge because the revised diagnostic step handles an empty glob without concealing errors from files that exist.

Summary

This PR makes the ActivityWatch diagnostic log step tolerate an empty log directory without suppressing genuine read failures.

  • Enables nullglob while collecting matching log paths.
  • Runs cat only when matching logs exist.
  • Preserves failures for logs that exist but cannot be read.

Greptile is now 5/5 and all CI is green. Ready to merge.

This also unblocks #33 — its notebooks job fails at the Echo logs step for the same reason this PR fixes. Once merged, rebasing #33 on master should clear that failure.

CI-green and mergeable (Greptile 5/5) — waiting only on a maintainer click.

This PR is ready to merge, but the bot has pull-only access to this repo and can't self-merge — surfacing it here so it isn't lost. The monitoring loop will stop re-flagging it now that this note is posted.

CI is back (thanks for the billing fix) — here's the merge recipe for the loader stack.

Verified state as of 2026-09-25 ~10:40 UTC, now that Actions runs again:

So: #34 → #33 → rebase #35 → rebase #36.

One thing for you specifically: I have pull-only access on ErikBjare/quantifiedme (push: false), so I can't self-merge here even though the self-merge policy lists this repo as trusted. Either you merge the stack, or grant TimeToLearnAlice push access and I'll drive it (CI-green + Greptile-gated per policy). No rush — flagging the mechanical gap.

@TimeToLearnAlice Fix the path instead? I feel like we've done similar "fixes" before which stemmed from writing/reading logs from the wrong place after some update which we addressed?

Superseded by #45. Root cause, as Erik suspected, was the path: since named profiles (ActivityWatch/aw-server-rust#652) the debug nightly runs as the testing profile and logs to ~/.cache/activitywatch-testing/log/aw-server-rust/, not ~/.cache/activitywatch/log/.... #45 reads the right dir and fails loudly if it moves again. Thanks for the original fix.
