Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the game.

  • Why is it called “Siren”?
    • It’s called Siren for two reasons: I wanted a cool acronym, and because sirens are mythological creatures. I figured sirens made sense, since many RPGs take place in fantasy worlds, and what are sirens if not fantastical?
    • The acronym stands for Simple RPG Engine, though whether or not that name fits, is up to the individual.
    • The game was originally called Afro: A Freeform Roleplayer. But that didn’t have quite the same ring to it
  • What’s LaTeX?
    • LaTeX (pronounced lay-tech), is a document type-setting and markup language for writing books, articles, reports, and papers.
  • Why LaTeX? Why not <insert proprietary format here>?
    • Simply because that’s the tool I’ve been trained to use as a computer science student.
    • It’s easier to use what you’re familiar with, than what you aren’t.
    • LaTeX files are plain-text, you can open them in any editor, formats like .docx or .pages require a special piece of software to open.
  • Can I become a contributor?
    • Yes and no.
    • If you want to submit pull requests, go right ahead, I won’t stop you.
    • If you want to become a primary contributor of the project and circumvent the pull request process, that probably won’t happen, because
      1. Pull requests make controlling the quality much easier, and
      2. I need to trust you enough to not go ahead and wreck the entire project.
  • I feel like I know <insert mechanic here> from some other RPG I’ve played
    • Yes! Most likely!
    • Siren is a love letter from me to the other RPGs I’ve played over the years.
    • I’ve borrowed left, right, and centre, using all the ideas and systems that I’ve felt worked really well, and tried to string them together best I could.
    • I’m simply a dwarf standing on the shoulders of giants.
  • Why only d6 dice, why not any of the other options?
    • Simply because it makes things easier for all parties.
    • Most people have at least a basic set of d6s among their games somewhere, and if not buying a set of yatzy isn’t all that expensive, and will usually provide more than an adequate amount of dice to share, whereas buying a set of polyhedral dice can get real expensive real fast.
