As described in Cheng et al. 2023, some terms that we have used are harmful to certain groups, and I want to ensure that all of these are removed/ replaced going forward. Here is a list of offensive terms and suggested replacements put forward by the EEB Language Project: https://www.eeblanguageproject.com/repository.

offensive term replace with comments status
alien / non-native / exotic / (invasive)* Non-endemic species / Newly arrived species / Non-Indigenous species / Introduced species our preferred term will be "non-endemic". finished first pass removal
*invasive species nuisance species *Invasive would describe a species that is not only non-endemic, but has also become very abundant. I'm not sure I like the term "nuisance" species - would prefer a more objective term finished first pass removal
gypsy moth Spongy moth finished first pass removal
