Incremental backups

I possibly just haven't noticed, but what I'm missing is a feature of incremental backup creation. 

Is there a parameter to initiate backing up of a VM based/dependent on a previous state, containing just the altered disk sectors? Should the previous snapshot be present/saved in the system?
