This project is mainly split into four parts:
-
Crawler: Scrape data from the UN Treaties web site
-
Data Preparation: Organize the data into a nice-to-work-with CSV or similar
-
Visualization: Create visualizations that illustrate the data
-
Impact: Use the data and visualizations to incentivize more countries to ratify treaties
See the original project idea for the initial discussion.
Our goals are:
- to make information about UN Treaties more accessible to people,
- to incentivize people in power to sign/follow up on treaties.
- List of treaties by number of parties (Wikipedia)
- United States Ratification of International Human Rights Treaties (Article by Human Rights Watch)
- Human Rights Library (University of Minnesota)
- an article advocating against the ratification of a treaty by the USA: interesting to see what arguments are used to justify such position.
- Where does the US stand on UN human rights conventions? (Jan.2018): something that should easily stand out from any visualization of these (non-) ratifications.
