Closing Bell: Bulls on Friday, Bears for the Week as Treasury Fears Lift Crypto

Worries about bond yields gave way to equity bulls Friday as investors anticipate Nvidia (NVDA) earnings and a Federal Reserve symposium next week.

Stocks managed modest gains on Friday despite a rise in yields. The benchmark 10-year yield was up about 4 basis points to 4.73%. On Friday the S&P Global Flash U.S. Composite Purchasing Managers' Index showed its highest reading since 2022, at 56 in August, indicating health among the manufacturing and services companies surveyed.

The Dow Industrials Index ($DJI) was up 0.98% on Friday and the S&P 500 (SPX) was up 0.43%. The small-cap Russell 2000 (RUT) rose 0.85%, while the Nasdaq-100 (NDX) rose 0.33%.

But stocks slid for the week with bond market pressure, and oil up 5% on the week to near $86.60 per barrel as tensions flare between the U.S. and Iran. The SPX fell 1.43% for the week and the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 (NDX) fell 2.45%, each snapping three-week win streaks. The Dow was down 0.85% last week, while the small-cap Russell 2000 fell 1.65%.

Some things to watch from Friday's market:

Bitcoin had its best week in more than two years, according to reports, with Bitcoin futures up nearly 7% Friday for a rise of roughly 23% for the week. The move was driven by the government's plans for Treasury buybacks and President Donald Trump's renewed calls for approval of crypto-friendly legislation. In addition, bitcoin exchange-traded funds saw big inflows, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Crypto-linked stocks such as Coinbase Global (COIN) and Strategy (MSTR) rallied as bitcoin jumped, with investors growing more confident about the possibility of a more favorable U.S. regulatory environment for crypto. The best-performing stock in the S&P 500 Friday was Robinhood Markets (HOOD), up nearly 14%. Shares of Broadcom were up 1.2% Friday. BMO Capital initiated coverage of Nvidia with an "Outperform" rating and a $340 price target, naming it their top large-cap semiconductor pick. Nvidia stock was down nearly 1% to $214.72 Friday, and the shares were down 4.6% on the week.
Summer Swoon Hits Stocks as Higher Oil Prices and Yield Volatility Crank the Heat on Markets

Markets had a downbeat mid-August week as renewed U.S.-Iran geopolitical tensions pushed crude oil above $87 a barrel.

Treasury yields are also rising with the 30-Year bond hitting a 19-year high this week and the 10-Year at its highest level since January of 2025. This has led to losses for the major indices this week. The Dow Industrial Index ($DJI) has fallen 1.8% so far this week, and the small-cap Russell 2000 (RUT) is down 2.5%.

The macro narrative may remain the key driver of market direction in the weeks ahead.

The week's biggest story was the volatility in the bond market. Treasury yields climbed to multi-year highs as investors reassessed inflation risks amid higher energy prices and the possibility that the Federal Reserve may need to maintain a restrictive policy stance longer than previously expected. The U.S. Department of the Treasury announcement to double its long-end bond buybacks, which provided a brief, one-day relief rally for stocks on Wednesday. Crude oil prices surged to four-week highs as concerns intensified over the security of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit corridors. WTI crude is up nearly 6% this week and traded above $87 per barrel. Walmart missed comparable sales expectations, reporting its first same-store sales decline since 2020. Target (TGT), on the other hand, had a beat on the top and bottom lines. This included 5.6% comparable sales growth, raising expectations that its recovery efforts were gaining traction.
Closing Bell: Dow Sinks, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Lower, on Bond Market Treasury Buyback Fears

It was a rough trading session with major indices falling a day after the U.S. Treasury said it would commence buybacks of long-dated government debt.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated the buybacks could expand beyond what was announced, according to reports. But Treasury yields moved higher, raising concerns about higher borrowing costs that could deflate market growth prospects. Concurrently, U.S.-Iran tensions sent oil prices higher. The U.S. benchmark rose more than 2% to more than $86 per barrel.

For the day, the S&P 500 (SPX) fell 0.87%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) was down 1.32%. The small-cap Russell 2000 (RUT) fell 1.34%. The Nasdaq-100 (NDX) was off by 0.72%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose 0.53%.

Here are four things to watch from Thursday’s market action:

Cryptocurrency stocks and some shares related to crypto trading rallied after President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass the stalled Clarity Act. Among stocks that were impacted by the crypto headline: Strategy (MSTR) rose 7.8%; it has significant Bitcoin holdings. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global (COIN) was up 7.6%. Bullish (BLSH), a digital asset exchange, was up nearly 5.7%. Circle Internet Group (CRCL), which issues dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies ("stablecoins"), was up 6.5%.

Walmart (WMT) stock tumbled more than 9% Thursday. The company’s quarterly results revealed that U.S. comparable sales grew by just 2.6%, the slowest pace in over six years. Otherwise, earnings per share beat analyst expectations, and Walmart increased its full-year guidance.

Alibaba Group Holdings (BABA) shares rose nearly 1.3% despite a decline in net profit of 76% to 10.54 billion yuan, according to reports. Revenue rose to 268.95 billion yuan on strength in Alibaba Cloud and AI-related products. What lifted the stock was commentary from the company that AI investment could break even within three years, according to Reuters. Another report noted that Nvidia (NVDA) AI chips Alibaba purchased as far back as 2018 are operating at full capacity in its AI infrastructure. Shares of Nvidia were down 0.33%.

Deere & Co. (DE) shares surged nearly 7% after it reported quarterly results, with strong performance in its Construction & Forestry division bolstered by infrastructure and data center demand.

For economic and earnings calendars for the remainder of the week, see Week Ahead: Retail Earnings, FOMC Minutes, Housing Data in Focus

Angrej Singh contributed to this report

U.S. Futures Flat Premarket on Tech, Oil Headwinds

U.S. stock futures are relatively flat in premarket trading as declines in tech shares and higher oil prices created headwinds for markets.

The moves come after weakness in stocks on Tuesday led by losses from semiconductor stocks with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) falling nearly 5%. While yields are pulling back from yesterday’s multiyear highs, oil prices are up roughly 0.6% to near $84.50 a barrel. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday no talks were taking place with Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz was open, contradicting Iran, which said the waterway remained closed.

Retail earnings will be in focus today with both Target (TGT) and Lowe’s (LOW) lower after reporting quarterly results this morning. Target beat estimates and raised its FY26 guidance but the shares are under pressure after a 56% surge so far this year.
Closing Bell: A Sea of Red on Chip Selloff, Stalled U.S.-Iran Negotiations

U.S. stocks moved lower Tuesday as bond yields hit multi-decade highs on concern about persistent inflation including the elevated price of oil.

A semiconductor pullback, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) down nearly 5%, also weighed on the broader market. The S&P 500 (SPX) was down 0.69%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) fell 0.22%. The small-cap Russell 2000 (RUT) slipped by 1.3%. Tech led the slide on Tuesday: The Nasdaq-100 (NDX) fell 1.68%. The Roundhill Memory Chip ETF (DRAM) dumped 8.76%.

With the U.S. and Iran at an impasse on peace negotiations, crude prices were up 0.41% to near $84 per barrel. Inflation from energy and other sources erodes the purchasing power of a bond's future cash flows, and yields have been rising as investors worry that oil prices could stay elevated. The U.S. 30-year Treasury bond yield hit a fresh 19-year high, above 5.3%, before pulling back. The benchmark 10-year yield hit highs above 4.7% last seen in January 2025. Rising yields, in turn, raise borrowing costs, a further source of market anxiety.

For more on yields and what is pressuring chip stocks, see NVDA, MU & Other Chip Weakness Weighs on Wall Street, HD Earnings Rattle Housing.

Highlights from Tuesday's market action:

The biggest S&P 500 gainer was Targa Resources (TRGP), which rose 7% following news Monday that it established 20-year agreements with ExxonMobil (XOM) for integrated natural gas gathering and processing (“G&P”) and downstream services in the oil-and-gas-rich Permian Basin, which spans Texas and New Mexico, as well as “treating, NGL transportation, and fractionation.” Targa emphasized its "substantial long-term volume growth" for its infrastructure from "wellhead to water." The midstream energy services company, with a market cap exceeding $63 billion, bills itself as one of the largest independent infrastructure companies in North America. XOM shares rose 2.4% Tuesday. Meanwhile, pending sales of previously owned homes fell 2.3% in July as high mortgage rates weighed on demand and record home prices pressured buyers, according to the National Association of Realtors. Home Depot (HD) reported earnings and revenue that exceeded analyst estimates and reaffirmed its full-year fiscal 2026 guidance. Shares of Home Depot fell fractionally Tuesday.
Housing in Focus with Lowe’s (LOW), Home Depot (HD) Earnings

The homebuilder and home improvement stocks could be volatile this week as earnings and economic data reveal the strength of second-quarter spending.

Home Depot (HD) shares were 2% higher in the premarket after reporting earnings this morning, while Lowe’s (LOW) is scheduled for earnings tomorrow morning. Luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers (TOL) will deliver its results this afternoon.

The NAHB Housing Market Index released Monday showed muted homebuilder sentiment. Meanwhile, Housing Starts came in below estimates at 1.239 million versus 1.345 million (est.), while Housing Permits came in higher at 1.443 million against 1.370 million (est.), according to Econoday. The Pending Home Sales report is due out later today and the MBA Mortgage Report is slated for tomorrow. Meanwhile, Wednesday afternoon’s FOMC Minutes could also be a catalyst for this interest rate-sensitive area of the market.

Here are three things to think about this week.

Sector Drivers: Homebuilder and home improvement companies are significantly intertwined with interest rates. High borrowing costs can stifle consumers’ ability to move, which in turn puts a squeeze on major pre-sale or post-move renovations. Some people also exhibit unusually strong reluctance to move and give up their low mortgage rates from pre-2022, which is when the Federal Reserve aggressively increased rates to counteract inflation after Covid-19 stimulus measures. Other notable factors can include tariffs impacting costs of imported building materials and furnishings, as well as general economic pressure, which can cause consumers to cut back on cosmetic upgrades or attempt more “do-it-yourself” projects rather than hire contractors.

Earnings: Home Depot’s adjusted earnings came in at $4.92 per share against Wall Street expectations of $4.71, with revenue of $47.86 billion vs. estimates of $47.46 billion, according to Zacks. CFO Richard McPhail said higher interest rates and continued inflation continue to keep homeowners from taking on debt for larger renovation projects. Meanwhile, estimates for Lowe’s EPS are $4.22 against $4.33 year-over-year (-2.5%), with revenue projections of $26.14 billion compared to $23.96 billion last year (+9.1%). For Toll Brothers, the consensus outlook calls for EPS is $2.90 against $3.73 last year (-22.3%) and revenue of $2.60 billion vs. $2.95 billion in the same period (-11.8%).

Economic Data: While Monday’s National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Housing Market Index showed a one-point increase to 35 in August, the report highlighted weaker builder sentiment resulting from economic/geopolitical uncertainty, higher mortgage rates, and rising construction costs. The report said higher gas and diesel prices are driving up material costs and noted this is the 16th straight month that at least 30% of builders report cutting prices to support demand as well as being the 16th straight month where the Index came in below 40.
Stocks at Record Highs – Bulls are in Charge in August

.S. stocks have pushed higher so far this week, with both the S&P 500 (SPX) and Russell 2000 (RUT) reaching record highs.

As investors welcomed encouraging inflation data, stability for oil prices, and another round of solid earnings, the ‘risk-on’ tone has expanded beyond mega-cap technology and has helped lift small-cap stocks alongside the major indices.

The S&P 500 climbed to a new all-time high above 7,800 on Thursday and finished at a record close near 7,799, while the Russell 2000 also ended the session at a fresh record high. Small caps have benefited from easing interest rate concerns and growing confidence that the Federal Reserve may not need to tighten policy further this year. The expectations for a rate hike at the September FOMC meeting are down to a 35% probability according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

With the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 now sitting at record highs, investors will keep their eyes on headline risks out of the Middle East and oil prices into the weekend. Looking ahead to next week, traders will focus on upcoming earnings and guidance from retailers for clues on whether consumers remain strong enough to support the rally through the remainder of August.

Behind the Market Rally: Easing Inflation Fears

Weaker inflation data this week has supported the push into equites. Wednesday's Consumer Price Index report met expectations, showing July CPI rose 0.1% month-over-month with the year-over-year falling to 3.4%. Thursday's Producer Price Index came in softer than expected. Headline PPI was unchanged from the prior month versus forecasts for a 0.2% increase, and the year-over-year figure fell to 4.7% versus the 4.9% expected. This reinforced hopes that inflation trends continue to moderate and eased concerns about additional Fed rate hikes. Investors responded by buying up equities.

Treasury yields were relatively stable this week, while oil prices pulled back sharply. The benchmark 10-Year Yield has consolidated near 4.65% as of Thursday’s close. WTI crude fell to near $81 per barrel on Thursday after a large build in U.S. EIA inventories and signs of weaker demand according to the IEA. Although oil is still up about 5% this week, this helped alleviate concerns that higher energy costs could reignite inflation.

Earnings and Technology Drive Momentum

Earnings continued to drive individual stock performance this month. AI-related technology names remained the leadership sector this week, helping power gains in the Nasdaq-100 (NDX) and broader market. Memory and semiconductor stocks such as Micron (MU) and SanDisk (SNDK) advanced 8.2% and 26.1% respectively this week as of Thursday’s close. Large-cap technology leaders including Nvidia (NVDA) and Meta (META) continued to support market momentum this month. It wasn’t all roses for post-earnings moves this week. Cisco Systems (CSCO) fell more than 8% on Thursday despite reporting results that topped expectations, as investors were skeptical about gross margins slowing.

The combination of moderating inflation, less volatile oil prices, resilient earnings growth, and strong AI-related demand has helped keep investors focused on economic growth rather than higher interest rates and geopolitical tensions.

However, the positive momentum vanished by Thursday as yields rebounded, dragging major indexes down on fiscal, inflation, and debt concerns.

Energy markets were also creating headwinds for stocks this week.

U.S. Futures Higher as Traders Await Inflation Report, CPI Data

U.S. stock futures are modestly higher ahead of the Wall Street open as traders await a key inflation report that will likely determine the near-term direction for interest rates.

The moves come after another downbeat day for stocks amid rising oil prices on Tuesday. The July consumer price index is due at 8:30 a.m. ET and is expected to show a month-over-month reading of 0.1% in the headline number and 0.2% for the core reading. On a year over year basis, the headline inflation reading is expected to fall to 3.4% from 3.5% in June with the core falling to 2.5% from the prior 2.6%.

But stocks slid for the week with bond market pressure, and oil up 5% on the week to near $86.60 per barrel as tensions flare between the U.S. and Iran.

Crude oil prices surged to four-week highs as concerns intensified over the security of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit corridors. WTI crude is up nearly 6% this week and traded above $87 per barrel.

Along with earnings, investors this afternoon will focus on the Fed minutes, which may shed light on three dissenters who voted for a 25 basis-point rate hike.

Snapshot (as of 8 AM ET)

Oil (/CL) – Oil futures are up 0.60% to $84.63 per barrel

Gold (/GC) – Gold futures are flat at 4,418.80 per ounce

Bitcoin (/BTC) – The cryptocurrency futures are down 0.26% to 54,545

VIX (/VIX) – The CBOE Volatility Index is down 0.76% to 15.72

U.S. Dollar ($DXY) – The dollar index is down 0.23% to 99.423

Big Premarket Movers (as of 8 AM ET)

Advancers:

Moderna (MRNA) 95.46%

Merck & Co.
