Placeholder method for the synthesis logic.
This is just another placeholder, with a docstring and basic parts of the synthesis loop.

This PR adds a bunch of "framework" stuff for structuring all the needed work in the near future. The purpose of this PR is to have a partial "skeleton" to build on and hopefully make the development path more clear for myself and anyone else.
