Hi I'm Serif! πŸ‘‹

I'm a computer programmer and a Management Information Systems graduate from TΓΌrkiye. πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡·

About Me

Linux Bash Python Git uv Ollama

I build automation tools and Linux utilities with a focus on maintainability, testing, and open-source software.

πŸš€ Project Journey

  • appimage-manager β€” Status A rewrite of the old my-unicorn repository, with a focus on a more maintainable codebase, functional programming, and a more robust testing suite.
  • ztarcompress β€” Status I started this project to improve my Python script, AutoTarCompress, by creating a cleaner and more maintainable codebase using functional programming.
  • my-unicorn β€” Status An old project that solved my own problem by automating AppImage installations and updates. I am still proud of this project because it taught me a lot during development. I made several design and architectural mistakes with it, so I started writing appimage-manager, a more maintainable codebase based on what I learned.
  • AutoTarCompress β€” Status I couldn't find a tool that could automatically create tar archives for selected directories in Linux, so I wrote this Python project to solve a real problem I had. AutoTarCompress is a backup and archive management tool for Linux. It supports compressed backups, encryption, extraction, cleanup, and more. I made the same mistake of overengineering it as I did with my-unicorn, so I started a new project called ztarcompress to create a more maintainable codebase.
Other Project Journey:
  • linux-system-utils β€” A collection of useful automated scripts for Linux, development operations, and more.
  • dotfiles β€” I solved the problem of managing my dotfiles by using GNU Stow instead of my previous bare Git repository approach. I also wrote a simple setup.sh script to automate the GNU Stow setup process.
  • parse-changelog β€” Parses CHANGELOG.md files that use Keep a Changelog as a template.
  • learning-notes β€” It is still ugly and unpolished, but I decided to publish my notes in case they might help others. I improved my knowledge of GitHub Pages and MkDocs.
  • pykanban β€” I created this repository to learn Python GUI programming with Qt. I learned the fundamentals of Qt through this project, but I still need to decide whether to use Qt or GTK for my future GUI projects.
  • auto-penguin-setup β€” I started this project to improve my Bash script, fedora-setup, by creating a more maintainable codebase using Python and functional programming. I learned that Python can be useful for Linux command-line tools and that it can be more difficult to work with than Bash. However, I still chose Python because it provides a more readable codebase and easier testing.
  • cyber-syntax.github.io β€” My GitHub Pages website. I have removed and recreated it several times while changing the site generators I used for my website. I learned Jekyll, Hugo, MkDocs, and Docusaurus, which I currently use, through this repository.
  • auto-snake β€” I started this project to learn a little about OpenCV. I ended up learning about Python's performance limitations because of the GIL. I tried using multiprocessing and C++ code to improve health-bar detection, but I found that integrating C++ code was difficult. Multiprocessing was much easier to integrate and maintain, so I continued developing that version.
  • WallpaperChanger β€” One of the first simple projects I started to learn Python. I learned from Atomic Habits that the environment is key to creating good habits, so I made this project to help me study. I still use this script without any issues. This script changes my wallpaper based on the time of day. I set some wallpapers for my workdays and others for my days off. If it is the middle of the week, the script changes my wallpaper to one of my workday wallpapers. If it is Sunday, the script changes my wallpaper to one of my days-off wallpapers.
  • Archived BatteryGuardian β€” I started this project to learn Bash while solving an important problem that Linux did not handle well: battery management. I tried my best to handle it with Bash, but then I realized that Bash was not suitable for writing a battery-management script, so I started version 2 with Python. This project is abandoned, but it taught me the fundamentals of how Linux batteries work, including ACPI.
  • Archived fedora-setup β€” A Bash script for configuring stuff on fedora linux distro. After writing this project, I decided to use Python to create a more maintainable version for setting up Fedora and Arch Linux, called auto-penguin-setup, because Bash was not a good fit for maintainability and testing.
  • Archived find_final_grade β€” One of the poorly written Python scripts I created when I was starting to learn Python. I was afraid to publish it, but eventually I decided to showcase it on GitHub to show how I have improved over time. I still fix some of the ugly mistakes in this and similar early projects, but I do not worry about them too much anymore. It calculates the final grade when the user enters their midterm grade.
  • Archived siyuan-appimage-update β€” This was the first project I published publicly on GitHub. I wrote the code while studying computer programming, but I always thought that my code was too ugly to show publicly. I changed my mind when I read a senior developer write about; that no one really cares how ugly your code if you are learning. This project eventually led me to start the my-unicorn project. It installs the latest Siyuan Note AppImage version and verifies its SHA-256 checksum.
  • Archived superProductivity-appimage-update β€” It installs the latest Super Productivity AppImage version and verifies its SHA-512 checksum.
