Thanks for checking the game out, it's currently still in early development.
Clone the repository to your local machine, and open it in a terminal. I use VS Code's intergrated terminal.
Rename .env.example to just .env
If you've changed SERVER_PORT in the server's .env file, then change REACT_APP_SERVER_PORT to reflect this change.
Run the following commands in the order listed:
npm install
npm start
npx tailwindcss -i ./src/input.css -o ./src/output.css --watch
We're using Javascript ES6 + TypeScript, React, ThreeJS, Axios, Node.js and Tailwind CSS, HTML, CSS. We want to provide a very fluid and responsive user experience, since right now most web/text-based games that I've played fall short in this area using outdated techonology.
I'm a big fan of the following genres in gaming: crime, simulators, role-playing, massively multiplayer, political, text-based. I wanted to combine all of these genres into my vision for the perfect game to me, and hopefully many others eventually. The idea is too have each player control criminal characters, who may band together to form families (mafia-esque). I want in-depth customization in the following areas: Character, Families, Safehouses, Rackets.
Right now the closed beta is extremely limited to trusted testers, and we'll let you know when this changes. We're very excited to share the game with you!
Players and families will control, expand and fight over tiles, which will be plots of land in the hand-crafted map for the game. Tiles will either be empty, or have already built structures that can't be destroyed like exclusive rackets, authority buildings, entertainment venues etc...
When it comes to empty tiles, the playerbase will be able to invest in buildings and infrastructure that will bring in money and/or resources. We'll also have player/family specific buildings like hideouts/safehouses/compounds that will be customizable as well. Infrastructure such as water, electricity, roads, rail and water will work in a similar way.
Politics between players/families/authorities will be a vital mechanic, allowing war/truces/deals between entities. Families can team up together to bring down another family that's expanding into their territory. Maybe they want access to move goods with another family's infrastructue, and in return they give a percentage of profits. A council of high ranking family members will be a coded part of the game, but my vision is that most of the politics happens in the community in discord servers etc...
Giving players the in-depth customization options to help build a character, encourages roleplaying and makes for a more vibrant, serious and bonded community. A developer can only do so much to breathe life into a game, the rest depends on the community that surronds and plays the game. We must allow players to create the stories they want, and be able to convey those stories clearly and easily.
Trading will be open to both solo players and families, you'll be able to sell and buy resources in a free market player-driven economy. Related to this I want a public API accessible by the playerbase, that would allow intuitive players to track, and even automate the trading process entirely with scripts.
The game will have multiple ways of making money and resources, and they will be called rackets. You will have ordinary staple rackets that are buildable on tiles, and we will also have exclusive rackets that are pre-allocated to tiles in cities that will not be buildable by players. These exclusive rackets will have special perks, that will encourage fighting between families.
This will be a family exclusive mecahnic, opened up by specific buildable infrastructure that will allow families to track others, spread disinformation and sow chaos amongst others through covert means. A sub-mechanic of risk will be included, that can make operations fail either privately or publicly.
