JupyterLab and Internet Explorer IE11

JupyterLab would open in the browser. The dots would circle for 2 seconds then the web page went blank.
(Jupyter Notebook works fine)

I noticed elsewhere a message that Git no longer supports older browsers such as Internet Explorer IE11.

So I tried making Firefox my default browser and Jupyterlab now works fine.

So this is a work-round but perhaps Jupyterlab should check the default browser for compatibility at install time?

Can I ask why you are using such old software? Your tickets seem to be stem from not updating your machine.

MS gave Windows 10 away to everyone for free for a long period of time and it's vastly superior to Windows 8.1, and comes with Edge browser too.

Millions of people use Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and IE11.
The history of MS upgrades shows why.
Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 are practically all the same - so vastly superior is clearly a nonsense.
Anaconda does not limit itself to the latest version of Windows so why are you asking me this question?

Jupyter Notebook is quite old now and therefore had to support various versions of IE since that's what most people used back then. JupyterLab do not currently support it well (and I wouldn't be surprised if it never supports it, but I cannot talk for that team). Supporting IE is a very heavy burden for web developers and software is a moving target involving many moving distinct parts, but in general old stuff breaks or gets somewhat neglected.

While we do support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (and will fix reasonable bug reports) you'll have a better time in most regards by using Windows 10 (and it was a free upgrade too). Our software is more frequently tested on Windows 10 than on these older, legacy versions.

IE11 does not support modern Javascript or web standards and many modern software projects do not support it well (or at all).

Why would we limit the computers that our software can be installed on according to what other software you have chosen to install (or not install). We do not know when you install Anaconda (or jupyterlab) whether you will later install a compatible modern web browser or not, nor do we know that you will want to run any software involving web browsers, and in my opinion we absolutely should not rummage around your hard-drive to see what software you have installed because that's an invasion of your privacy, very difficult to do well and likely to be slow.

JupyterLab does work on Edge to some extent and I believe the team hope to support it better in future. The latest documentation states:

2.6 Supported browsers
The latest versions of the following browsers are currently known to work:
• Firefox
• Chrome
• Safari
Earlier browser versions may also work, but come with no guarantees.
JupyterLab uses CSS Variables for styling, which is one reason for the minimum versions listed above. IE 11+ or Edge 14 do not support CSS Variables, and are not directly supported at this time. A tool like postcss can be used to convert the CSS files in the jupyterlab/build directory manually if desired.

Personally, I use Open Source software when possible, so when I am on Windows I use Chrome and Firefox instead of IE11 and Edge. Using IE11 these days unless you are forced to by some legacy IT policy is just weird (again, just my opinion).

Further to the Edge support, this comment on Stack Overflow indicates that Edge has added support for CSS Variables: https://stackoverflow.com/a/39596809/3257826 but I don't really know the ins and outs of web development.

I have already stated I used Firefox browser to get JupyterLab to work.
IE11 is the latest browser that Microsoft installs and supports for W8.1 etc.
Anaconda does hunt around to see what is installed whenever it checks if a module can be safely upgraded.

No, it is aware of its own world only, and of nothing outside of that and I disagree with the your suggestion that it should do more, therefore I am closing this.
