Chapter 3 #12

What do you think about possibly putting a schwoop on the tail of the Ꮼ/wo/hwo and straightening the ‘leg’ of Ꮢ/sv? I think it would be helpful to make those changes on your syllabary chart and in your handwritten examples.

  1. In some fonts, the only real difference between Ꭷ and Ꮼ is the schwoop on the tail of Ꮼ. I know this gives many learners quite a bit of difficulty when first encountering these fonts, and I think introducing them now to that distinctive schwoop on the Ꮼ, even thought that schwoop isn’t the only differentiating factor between the Ꭷ and Ꮼ in the font you’re using in the book, could help the students in the future when they do inevitably encounter such a font. It will also better match the font you use in your book, which has a schwoop on its Ꮼ.

  2. I like how you’ve written your Ꮢ so that the two sides don’t meet at the ‘waist’. There’s a nice gap there, that’s important and it will be very helpful to students. I think straightening the ‘leg’ of the Ꮢ might further help prepare students for when they eventually encounter a font where the difference between Ꭱ and Ꮢ is no longer whether it has a flat ‘foot’ (serif) or a curved ‘kickstand’, but instead whether it has a straight ‘leg’ or curved ‘leg’ and whether it meets at the ‘waist’.
