Project Choices
Team Sleep Deprived
Potential Projects:
1: Mozilla: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Developer_guide/Introduction
As Dr Bowring mentioned, Mozilla is an open source community that is always welcoming newcomers. They make the Firefox web browser and on their site, mention having contributors with many different skillsets. JavaScript or HTML/CSS for front end, Java for Firefox on Android, Python for their web services, and C for NSS, Opus, and Daala. These are just a few of the languages and technologies that are mentioned. They have a seemingly easy step by step guide for contributing and finding a bug to work on as well as documentation to assist learning the current Mozilla codebase.
2: Apache Open Office: https://www.openoffice.org/
Apache Open Office is a set of six productivity applications such as a word processor and spreadsheet, which are all maintained through open source code and are actively seeking more people to help maintain and improve the software. They even mention that if you are not a programmer you can still help by assisting with documentation, designing artwork and marketing materials, and even just promoting Open Office and helping to explain it's benefits. They have developed a set of "New Volunteer Orientation Modules" for new volunteers to get started.
3: Sugarlabs: https://github.com/sugarlabs
Sugar is a learning platform for children. There is a list of critical projects that they say are a great place for Python programmers to jump in. They have a list of bugs in a "issues" section of their GitHub that are in need of work. They also discuss needing improvement to their documentation. The Sugar environment doesn't appear to be as detailed as the Apache Open Office and certainly not as compared with the Mozilla. For this reason, we have it listed as our third choice.
