This feature isn't related to a problem but it is a feature me and my friends have been thinking about and wanting for a while now. Anyways we were thinking to match the cyberdeck and ethical hacking feel of Bruce Firmware we thought it would be such a cool idea to have something like one of these. 1 being where either the Bruce official web flasher or a GitHub page has maps based on location to flash on your devices micro SD card to display a one color basic environment with a zoom and unzoom feature onto you if possible. This feature could probably show major streets at full zoom and a few blocks and streets around you at full zoom. If that is too much to ask for I think it would still be very cool to just have the zoom locked on you being shown with a few blocks and streets around you as an arrow or compass head based on where your facing. Of course this feature will only work on devices with GPS like the lilygo t-deck plus which is what I use, this would bring up the operating systems size by a lot if it's flashed onto the devices internal storage so I personal think it would be best to have this on a separate tab in the web flasher being written to your micro SD card like I said earlier. Of course this feature would be best if it worked offline just using GPS to pull a location, maybe even showing exact coordinates in the corner. This feature would be very useful for a lot of people for doing offline navigation an projects without having to use another OS at the same time like meshtastic. It would just be a lot better and easier for people to have the 2 main things these esp32 are used for all in one place: Navigation, and ethical hacking.
I'm not to sure how hard this would be to make a map for major locations like the US or if you need to make it for smaller locations like just New York, St. Louis, San Diego, etc... but if you could at least implement this feature in any way even if it's a very basic map I still think it would be such a cool cyberdeck like feature. Literally if this feature can be implemented an in any offline way I think the community would love it including me who lives in St. Louis.
Some other plans to help this feature be better or work:
-
This one's pretty obvious but it can be stored in GPS --> coordinates --> Map, or, GPS --> Map
-
Instead of using the full US or whatever country you could have options like USA --> Missouri --> St. Louis
-
Using an existing open data map source rather than making one from scratch could save a lot of time
-
You could have a waypoint feature where the user can select a point on their map and it would save that location on the micro SD card
-
You could use more of a vector map to save space on the SD card and to make it easier for you if you decide to make it from scratch for some reason
-
If you do use an existing open data map then you could of course change stuff like the gui theme of Bruce Firmware and the one color design like the iconic purple.
That's all I have to say, sorry it was long but it's just that me and my friends and other people I've mentioned this feature to think it's such a great plan! I really hope this gets implemented some way, and excited to see where this goes!
Thanks 👍
