Feature Request: Upcoming Events block

Coming from here, I'm raising this as a request from @supernovia:

Hackday idea: can we get a nice Upcoming Events block, similar to the https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/upcoming-events/#upcoming-events-shortcodeshortcode> but with more display options, like hiding descriptions and formatting dates so they don't look unkempt in a list? I've seen multiple requests for things like that recently.
