Quick summary
The style variation selector in onboarding displays differently depending on whether the style variations come from the theme, or whether they're generic variations
Steps to reproduce
- Go to wordpress.com/start
- Work through onboarding, choosing a Premium plan, until you get to the design picker
- Choose Fewer (a theme with built-in style variations), note that the style variations are displayed together
- Go back
- Choose Yuga (a theme which uses shared style variations)
- Click Colours
- Note that Free style and Premium styles are displayed separately.
- Go back
- Click Fonts
- Note that free fonts and premium fonts are displayed separately.
What you expected to happen
I expected the colours and fonts selections, and the style variation selections to work in the same way no matter where the style variations come from.
To be more precise:
- Colours and fonts ought to display a combined listing of the free variation and premium variations if the user is on a plan that grants them access to premium variations (explorer/premium plan and up).
- Colours and fonts ought to display separate listings of the free variation and premium variations if the user is on a plan that does not grant them access to premium variations. (free & starter plans)
i.e. it should work like themes with built-in style variations do.
What actually happened
There wasn't any consistency
