Description
Quick summary
In the Site Editor, the “Choose a Pattern” modal shows after clicking “Save” (exact conditions/cause for what triggers the modal is still unknown).
Clicking the “X” icon (or “Skip”) brings us back to the Site Editor.
The site looks normal from within the Site Editor, but when viewing the site on the frontend, the site now shows an “Empty template: Blog Home” message.

Steps to reproduce
- Appearance -> Editor -> make edits in the "Blog Home" template -> Save
What you expected to happen
I'd expect the "Choose a pattern" modal to not show up.
OR
If it is intentional the modal shows up, I'd expect that when clicking the "X" or "Skip" links on the modal would not result in the homepage content being deleted.
What actually happened
The "Choose a pattern" modal is displayed after clicking "Save", and after clicking "X" or "Skip" in the modal, the homepage content no longer shows when viewing the site on the frontend.

Logs or notes
- Experienced issue while using the Twenty Twenty-Three theme. Have not tested on any other themes.
- Workaround (for restoring homepage content) is to visit the Revisions tab in the editor and restore to the most recent point. Doing that restores the homepage content.
