WebP encoding support

Please support webp format. Its by far the best but it needs more support!

+1, but you can use cwebp (node-webp) for recoding to WebP.
But it slow!

Is what would out perform every other format. I am launching a project on google chrome. It would be great to have this feature available

Doesn't that seriously make you wan't to support this format (we can fallback to png ourselves if webp is not supported)

Experimental plugin for webp: https://github.com/node-gfx/node-canvas-webp.

Did it as a separate module because (a) the libwebp dependency is a challenge and (b) I wanted to make a public demo of linking against canvas. Could move it to core if (a) is resolved.

Any update on the progress of this? @zbjornson plugin is nice but not building for macOs (Pre-M1): ld: can't link with bundle (MH_BUNDLE) only dylibs (MH_DYLIB) file '{cut out personal info}/node_modules/canvas/build/Release/canvas.node' for architecture x86_64

@mjgerace I haven't looked at it since 2018 and unfortunately don't have time to work on it. I'm happy to review PRs if you want to work on it though.

It looks like I checked in some prebuilt static archives from libwebp, but dynamic libraries need to be built for MacOS.

@zbjornson hey Zach - totally understand. I see your libwebp.a file there - any pointers/articles on what process I would need to follow to fix? I am more than happy to PR if you can set me on the right path. Perhaps @Xetera also would have input?

@mjgerace Google only provides static libs, so you need to compile the shared/dynamic lib (https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/docs/compiling). The bottom of the readme for node-canvas-webp has some notes on this. With any luck, it will be as simple as that.
