If I use perf stat the cycles and instruction events show <not counted> about 99% of the time. Has anyone else had any luck with perf? Could something perhaps be wrong with the driver? I am on an M1 Mac Mini.

Hey, the performance counters on the M1 architecture are pretty much disabled considering all of the available performance counters are EL1 privilege and up. I'm currently trying to write a kernel module to expose those performance counters to userspace. Currently, I'm failing to do so with asahilinux, but able to do so on macOS.

update:
It seems as if asahi didn't expose the system registers of the M1 through the hypervisor. I'm unable to read (nor edit) very simple EL0 registers such as CNTPCT_EL0 on asahi but I'm able to do so on macOS.

I have been in to the IRC rooms and got help to solve my problem. Specifying a core will yield results.

I am now using a command like:

sudo taskset --cpu-list 0 perf stat -C 0 -e apple_firestorm_pmu/cycles/ -e apple_icestorm_pmu/cycles/ -e apple_firestorm_pmu/instructions/ -e apple_icestorm_pmu/instructions/ awk 'BEGIN{for(i=0;i<1000000;i++){}}'

to profile a program on a specific core.

If a non-root cgroup gets removed when there is a thread that registered
trigger and is polling on a pressure file within the cgroup, the polling
waitqueue gets freed in the following path:

 do_rmdir
   cgroup_rmdir
     kernfs_drain_open_files
       cgroup_file_release
         cgroup_pressure_release
           psi_trigger_destroy

However, the polling thread still has a reference to the pressure file and
will access the freed waitqueue when the file is closed or upon exit:

 fput
   ep_eventpoll_release
     ep_free
       ep_remove_wait_queue
         remove_wait_queue

This results in use-after-free as pasted below.

The fundamental problem here is that cgroup_file_release() (and
consequently waitqueue's lifetime) is not tied to the file's real lifetime.
Using wake_up_pollfree() here might be less than ideal, but it is in line
with the comment at commit 42288cb ("wait: add wake_up_pollfree()")
since the waitqueue's lifetime is not tied to file's one and can be
considered as another special case. While this would be fixable by somehow
making cgroup_file_release() be tied to the fput(), it would require
sizable refactoring at cgroups or higher layer which might be more
justifiable if we identify more cases like this.
