When to Choose Horizontal Over Vertical Scaling

Horizontal Scaling (Scaling Out):

  1. Definition: Involves adding more machines or nodes to a system to distribute the load. Each node typically has similar hardware and runs the same software.

  2. Scalability: Offers potentially unlimited scalability since you can continually add new machines as your workload grows.

  3. Fault Tolerance: Improves fault tolerance. If one node fails, other nodes can continue to handle the workload.

  4. Complexity: Requires a system architecture that supports distributed computing, which can be more complex to implement and manage. It involves challenges like data synchronization, load balancing, and ensuring consistency.

  5. Cost: Initial cost can be lower, especially if using cloud services where you can add and remove resources as needed. However, managing a distributed system can increase operational costs.

  6. Use Cases: Ideal for web applications, large databases, and services with fluctuating workloads.

Vertical Scaling (Scaling Up):

  1. Definition: Involves upgrading the existing machine with more powerful hardware, such as a faster CPU, more RAM, or increased storage capacity.

  2. Scalability: Limited by the maximum capacity of a single machine. There's a physical limit to how much a single server can be upgraded.

  3. Fault Tolerance: Does not inherently improve fault tolerance. If the single, more powerful server fails, the entire system can go down.

  4. Complexity: Generally simpler to implement as it doesn't require changes to the software architecture. It's about making the existing machine more powerful.

  5. Cost: Can be cost-effective for small to medium-sized applications but becomes expensive and less feasible as you approach hardware limits.

  6. Use Cases: Suitable for applications with consistent workloads or where data and application distribution is complex or unnecessary.

Comparison:

  • Scalability: Horizontal scaling offers more potential scalability compared to vertical scaling.
  • Fault Tolerance: Horizontal scaling can provide better fault tolerance and high availability.
  • Cost and Complexity: Vertical scaling is simpler and potentially cheaper for small to medium workloads, but horizontal scaling offers better flexibility and performance for larger, more dynamic workloads.
  • Implementation: Vertical scaling is often easier to implement as it requires fewer architectural changes, while horizontal scaling requires a distributed system design.

Load Balancer

A load balancer is a critical component in distributed computing and networking that plays a central role in distributing incoming network traffic or requests across multiple servers or nodes in a way that optimizes resource utilization, maximizes throughput, minimizes response time, and ensures high availability and reliability. Load balancers are essential for several reasons in distributed systems:

1. Distribution of Workload: Load balancers evenly distribute incoming requests or network traffic across multiple servers. This distribution prevents any single server from becoming overwhelmed with requests while others remain underutilized. This balance optimizes the overall system's performance and ensures that resources are used efficiently.

2. High Availability: Load balancers enhance system availability by spreading traffic across multiple servers. If one server becomes unavailable due to hardware failure, maintenance, or other reasons, the load balancer can redirect traffic to healthy servers. This results in increased fault tolerance and reduced downtime.

3. Scalability: As traffic to a system grows, adding more servers or nodes can help handle the increased load. Load balancers make it easy to scale horizontally by accommodating new servers seamlessly. This scalability is essential for systems that experience variable or unpredictable workloads.

4. Redundancy: Load balancers can be configured with redundant components to ensure high availability. If the primary load balancer fails, a secondary one can take over without service interruption.

5. Session Persistence: In some cases, it's necessary to maintain session persistence, ensuring that a user's requests are consistently routed to the same server. Load balancers can be configured to support session affinity, which is important for applications that require stateful sessions.

Request-Response Pattern

Request-Response Pattern The request-response pattern is a fundamental building block for how the front-end and back-end of web applications chat with each other. This pattern is like a conversation between the client (say your browser) and the server, where they take turns speaking. Imagine it as a “ping-pong” of data.

request/response communication model How does the Request-Response pattern work? This pattern is all about synchronization. The client sends a request to the server, kind of like raising your hand to ask a question in class. Then it patiently waits for the server to respond before it can move on.

It’s like a polite conversation — one speaks, the other listens, and then they swap roles.

You’ve probably heard of RESTful APIs, right? Well, they’re a prime example of the request-response model in action.

When your app needs some data or wants to do something on the server, it crafts an HTTP request — say GET, POST, PUT, or DELETE (like asking nicely for a page), and sends it to specific endpoints (URLs) on the server. The server then processes your request and replies with the data you need or performs the requested action.

It’s like ordering your favorite dish from a menu — you ask, and the kitchen (server) cooks it up for you.

Interestingly, there’s more than one way to have this conversation. Besides REST, there’s GraphQL, an alternative that lets you ask for exactly the data you want. It’s like customizing your order at a restaurant — you get to pick and choose your ingredients.

It’s important to note that this pattern isn’t just limited to web applications. You’ll spot it in Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), database queries (with the server being the client and the database, the server), and network protocols (HTTP, SMTP, FTP) to name a few. It’s like the language of communication for the web.

Benefits of the Request-Response pattern Ease of Implementation and Simplicity: The way communication flows in this model is pretty straightforward, making it a go-to choice for many developers, especially when they’re building apps with basic interaction needs.

Flexibility and Adaptability (One Size Fits Many): The request-response pattern seamlessly fits into a wide range of contexts. You can use it for making API calls, rendering web pages on the server, fetching data from databases, and more.

Scalability: Each request from the client is handled individually, so the server can easily manage multiple requests at once. This is highly beneficial for high-traffic websites, APIs that get tons of calls, or cloud-based services.

Reliability: Since the server always sends back a response, the client can be sure its request is received and processed. This helps maintain data consistency and ensures that actions have been executed as intended even during high-traffic scenarios.

Ease of Debugging: If something goes wrong, the server kindly sends an error message with a status code stating what happened. This makes error handling easy.

Limitations of the Request-Response Pattern Latency Problem: Because it’s a back-and-forth conversation, there’s often a waiting period. This amounts to idle periods and amplifies latency, especially when the request requires the server to perform time-consuming computing tasks.

Data Inconsistency in Case of Failures: If a failure occurs after the server has processed the request but before the response is delivered to the client, data inconsistency may result.

Complexity in Real-Time Communication: For applications that need lightning-fast real-time communication (like live streaming, gaming, or chat apps), this pattern can introduce delays and is therefore unsuitable for these use-cases.

Inefficiency in Broadcasting: In scenarios where you need to send the same data to multiple clients at once (broadcast), this pattern can be a bit inefficient. It’s like mailing individual letters instead of sending one group message.

ACID Properties in System Design:

ACID properties are a set of principles that guarantee reliable processing of database transactions. They are crucial for ensuring data integrity and consistency in relational databases, especially in the presence of errors, power failures, and other anomalies. ACID stands for Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability.

  1. Atomicity:
  • What It Means: Atomicity ensures that a transaction is treated as a single, indivisible unit, which means either all its operations are completed successfully, or none are.
  • In Practice: If an error occurs during a transaction, any changes made up to that point are rolled back, and the database state remains unchanged. For example, in a banking system, when transferring money from one account to another, both the debit and credit operations must complete successfully; otherwise, the transaction is aborted.
  1. Consistency:
  • What It Means: Consistency ensures that a transaction brings the database from one valid state to another valid state, maintaining all predefined rules, such as constraints, cascades, and triggers.
  • In Practice: After a transaction completes, all data in the database must be correct according to all defined rules. For instance, in an inventory system, a transaction should not allow the quantity of items to become negative.
  1. Isolation:
  • What It Means: Isolation ensures that concurrently executed transactions do not affect each other’s execution and final result. This means the transactions are isolated from each other.
  • In Practice: The effects of an incomplete transaction should not be visible to other transactions. Different levels of isolation can be achieved (Read Uncommitted, Read Committed, Repeatable Read, Serializable), each with its trade-offs between performance and accuracy.
  1. Durability:
  • What It Means: Durability guarantees that once a transaction has been committed, it will remain so, even in the event of power loss, crashes, or errors.
  • In Practice: After a transaction is completed and the changes are committed to the database, these changes are permanently recorded and will not be lost even if the system crashes immediately afterward.

Understanding ACID properties is essential in system design, particularly for applications that require high reliability and data integrity. SQL databases, like PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server, are designed to provide these ACID guarantees, ensuring that transactions are processed reliably. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including financial systems, e-commerce platforms, and any other system where data accuracy and consistency are crucial.

Content Delivery Network (CDN)

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a distributed network of servers strategically located in various data centers around the world. The primary purpose of a CDN is to deliver web content, such as text, images, videos, scripts, and other media files, to end-users in a faster, more efficient, and reliable manner. CDNs offer several advantages, including:

  1. Reduced Latency: CDNs cache content on servers that are geographically closer to end-users. This proximity reduces the time it takes for content to travel over the internet, significantly lowering latency and improving website loading times.

  2. Improved Performance: Faster loading times lead to a better user experience. Websites and applications served through CDNs are more responsive, resulting in higher user engagement and satisfaction.

  3. Scalability: CDNs distribute the load across multiple servers, making it easier to handle high levels of traffic and sudden spikes in demand. This scalability is essential for websites and applications with varying traffic patterns.

  4. Load Balancing: CDNs often include load balancing mechanisms that route user requests to the nearest and least congested server, ensuring efficient content delivery and optimal performance.

  5. Distributed Redundancy: CDNs replicate content on multiple servers in different locations. This redundancy enhances reliability and fault tolerance. If one server fails or experiences issues, traffic is automatically redirected to another server with the same content.

  6. Security: CDNs offer security features like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, Web Application Firewall (WAF) services, and SSL/TLS encryption to safeguard websites and applications from various threats and attacks.

CDNs are widely used by websites, e-commerce platforms, media streaming services, and any online service that relies on delivering content quickly and reliably to users across the globe. They are an essential component of modern web infrastructure, helping businesses provide a seamless online experience to their customers.

Consistency Patterns

Consistency patterns refer to the ways in which data is stored and managed in a distributed system, and how that data is made available to users and applications. There are three main types of consistency patterns:

Strong consistency

Weak consistency

Eventual Consistency

Each of these patterns has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which pattern to use will depend on the specific requirements of the application or system.

HTTP

HTTP, which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a fundamental protocol of the World Wide Web. It is the foundation of data communication on the internet, allowing web browsers (like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari) to retrieve and display web pages and enabling users to interact with web applications and services. Here are some key points about HTTP:

  1. Client-Server Communication: HTTP operates on a client-server model, where one entity (the client) makes requests, and another entity (the server) responds to those requests. The client is typically a web browser or a mobile app, while the server hosts websites, web applications, or web services.

  2. Stateless Protocol: HTTP is a stateless protocol, which means that each request from a client to a server is treated as an independent transaction. The server does not retain any information about previous requests from the same client. This statelessness simplifies the protocol but can pose challenges for maintaining user sessions in web applications.

  3. Request-Response Cycle: An HTTP interaction follows a request-response cycle. The client sends an HTTP request to the server, specifying the desired resource (e.g., a web page URL). The server processes the request and sends back an HTTP response, which includes the requested resource or an error message.

  4. Methods (HTTP Verbs): HTTP defines various request methods, also known as HTTP verbs, to indicate the action the client wants the server to perform. Common HTTP methods include:

    • GET: Retrieve data from the server.
    • POST: Submit data to the server for processing (e.g., submitting a form).
    • PUT: Update an existing resource on the server.
    • DELETE: Remove a resource from the server.
    • HEAD: Retrieve only the headers of a resource (useful for checking if a resource has been modified).
    • OPTIONS: Request information about the communication options supported by the server.
  5. Headers: HTTP messages (requests and responses) include headers, which provide additional information about the message and its content. Headers can convey details like the content type, caching directives, authentication credentials, and more.

  6. Status Codes: HTTP responses include status codes that indicate the outcome of the request. Common status codes include 200 (OK), 404 (Not Found), 500 (Internal Server Error), and many others. Status codes help clients understand how to handle the response.

  7. HTTPS: While HTTP is the standard protocol for web communication, it does not provide data encryption or secure data transmission. To address security concerns, HTTPS (HTTP Secure) uses encryption (usually TLS/SSL) to secure data transmitted between the client and server. It's commonly used for secure online transactions, login pages, and any sensitive data transfer.

HTTP is a crucial part of the modern internet, facilitating the exchange of web content, data, and services. It forms the basis for web development and enables users to interact with websites, web applications, APIs, and various online resources.

CAP Theorem

The CAP theorem, also known as Brewer's theorem, is a fundamental principle in distributed systems that was formulated by computer scientist Eric Brewer in 2000. The theorem highlights the inherent trade-offs between three desirable properties of a distributed system: Consistency, Availability, and Partition Tolerance. These properties are often referred to as the CAP triad:

  1. Consistency: In a distributed system, consistency means that all nodes or components in the system see the same data at the same time. In other words, when a write operation is performed, all subsequent read operations should return the updated value. Achieving consistency ensures that the system provides strong data integrity guarantees but may lead to increased latency and decreased availability during network partitions or failures.

  2. Availability: Availability implies that every request made to a distributed system receives a response, without guaranteeing that the response contains the most up-to-date data. An available system continues to function and respond to requests even if some nodes or components are experiencing failures. High availability is critical for systems that need to remain operational and responsive, but it may result in temporary inconsistencies between nodes.

  3. Partition Tolerance: Partition tolerance addresses the system's ability to function and maintain its desired properties (consistency and availability) even when network partitions or communication failures occur between nodes. Network partitions can cause some nodes to become unreachable or isolated from the rest of the system. A partition-tolerant system can continue to operate despite these network issues.

The CAP theorem asserts that in a distributed system, you can achieve at most two out of the three properties simultaneously but not all three. Here are the three classic scenarios described by the CAP theorem:

  1. CA (Consistency and Availability): In this scenario, the system prioritizes both consistency and availability at the expense of partition tolerance. It ensures that all nodes have consistent data and responds to every request, even if it means rejecting requests when a partition occurs. This model is suitable for systems where data consistency is paramount, and it can tolerate temporary unavailability.

  2. CP (Consistency and Partition Tolerance): In this scenario, the system prioritizes both consistency and partition tolerance at the expense of availability. It guarantees that data remains consistent across all nodes and can handle network partitions, but during a partition, it may choose to become temporarily unavailable to ensure data consistency.

  3. AP (Availability and Partition Tolerance): In this scenario, the system prioritizes availability and partition tolerance at the expense of strong consistency. It ensures that the system remains available and responsive, even during network partitions, but it may allow some degree of inconsistency between nodes, which can be resolved later.

It's important to note that the CAP theorem provides a framework for understanding trade-offs in distributed systems but does not prescribe a specific choice. The choice between CA, CP, or AP depends on the specific requirements and use cases of the distributed system. Different applications may prioritize different aspects of the CAP triad based on their needs for data consistency, availability, and fault tolerance. Additionally, advancements in distributed database technologies have led to systems that attempt to provide various degrees of consistency, availability, and partition tolerance, blurring the lines between these traditional categories.

SQL VS NO SQL Database

Choosing between SQL (Structured Query Language) databases and NoSQL databases depends on various factors including the nature of your data, scalability needs, and the specific requirements of your application. Here are some key considerations to help decide when to use each:

SQL Databases

  1. Structured Data: Best for handling structured data with a fixed schema, such as customer information in a CRM system.
  2. Complex Queries: Ideal for complex query requirements. SQL databases excel in powerful query languages that can handle complex joins and transactions.
  3. ACID Transactions: Suitable for applications that require Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability (ACID) in transactions, like banking or financial applications.
  4. Relational Data: If your data is heavily interrelated and you need to maintain those relationships, SQL is typically a better choice.
  5. Stability and Maturity: SQL databases, such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, are mature technologies with a wealth of support and documentation.
  6. Reporting and Analysis: Better for scenarios where you need to perform in-depth analysis and generate reports.

NoSQL Databases

  1. Unstructured or Semi-Structured Data: Ideal for unstructured or semi-structured data, such as JSON, XML, and other document formats.
  2. Scalability: More suitable for applications that require horizontal scalability, as they are designed to expand easily across multiple servers.
  3. High-Volume Data: Better for handling large volumes of data at high speed, like real-time analytics or big data applications.
  4. Flexible Schema: Useful when you have rapidly changing schemas or when you want to iterate quickly without having to migrate a database schema.
  5. Variety of Data Types: They support a wide range of data types and structures, such as key-value, document, columnar, and graph databases.
  6. Simplicity and Speed: Generally simpler and can offer higher write and read speeds for certain workloads.

Considerations

  • Consistency Requirements: SQL databases often offer stronger consistency models compared to NoSQL databases.
  • Skill Set: Consider the expertise available in your team. SQL is a widely known language, whereas NoSQL databases might require additional learning.
  • Vendor Lock-In: Some NoSQL databases are proprietary, which might lead to vendor lock-in.
  • Cost: Evaluate the total cost of ownership, including licensing, maintenance, and scaling costs.

Token Bucket Algorithm

The Token Bucket Algorithm is a popular method for controlling the rate at which events occur in distributed systems, particularly in scenarios where events or requests need to be limited to a specified rate. It's commonly used for rate limiting, traffic shaping, and ensuring that a system does not exceed a defined rate or burstiness of events. Here's how the Token Bucket Algorithm works:

  1. Token Bucket: Imagine a bucket that gets filled with tokens at a fixed rate. These tokens represent permission or credit to perform an action or event. The bucket has a maximum capacity, and any tokens beyond this capacity are discarded.

  2. Token Generation: Tokens are generated at a constant rate and added to the bucket. For example, if you want to allow 10 requests per second, you might add one token every 100 milliseconds.

  3. Request Processing: When an event or request arrives, it must consume one or more tokens from the bucket to proceed. If there are not enough tokens available, the event is delayed until there are sufficient tokens or discarded if the bucket is empty.

  4. Bucket Capacity: The bucket has a maximum capacity that limits the number of tokens it can hold. Tokens added to a full bucket are simply discarded.

Key Characteristics and Advantages:

  • Rate Control: The Token Bucket Algorithm provides precise control over the rate at which events or requests are allowed to occur.

  • Burst Handling: The algorithm can handle bursts of traffic efficiently. If tokens accumulate in the bucket, short bursts of events can be accommodated.

  • Simplicity: It's a straightforward algorithm to implement and understand, making it a popular choice for rate limiting.

  • Predictable Behavior: The Token Bucket Algorithm ensures a predictable and stable rate of event processing, which can be beneficial for system stability.

Round Robin Load Balancing

It's a simple algorithm that ensures that each server in the pool gets a turn to handle a request in a cyclic or circular fashion. Here's how Round Robin load balancing works:

  1. Server List: The load balancer maintains a list of available servers that can handle incoming requests. These servers are typically identical in terms of capacity and capabilities.

  2. Request Arrival: When a new request arrives at the load balancer, it needs to be directed to one of the servers in the list.

  3. Server Selection: The load balancer selects the next server from the list to handle the request. It follows a cyclical pattern, meaning that it starts from the beginning of the list and goes through the servers in order.

  4. Request Forwarding: The selected server is then assigned the incoming request to process. The load balancer forwards the request to the chosen server.

  5. Rotation: After handling a request, the selected server moves to the end of the server list. The next request will be directed to the server that follows it in the list. This rotation continues for each incoming request.

Key characteristics and considerations of Round Robin load balancing:

  • Even Distribution: Round Robin ensures that requests are distributed evenly among the servers. Each server gets an equal share of incoming traffic, preventing overloading of any one server.

  • Simplicity: Round Robin is straightforward to implement and doesn't require complex algorithms or state tracking. It's easy to understand and manage.

  • No Server State Consideration: Round Robin does not take into account the current load or performance of each server. It treats all servers equally and doesn't consider factors like server health or response times.

  • Predictable Behavior: Since the distribution pattern is deterministic, you can predict which server will handle the next request in the rotation.

Round Robin load balancing is suitable for scenarios where servers are relatively homogeneous in terms of capacity and performance, and where simplicity and equal distribution are more important than advanced load balancing considerations.     • Strong consistency provides the highest level of data consistency but may lead to increased latency and reduced system availability, especially in the presence of network partitions.
  2. Sequential Consistency:

    • Sequential consistency relaxes the strictness of strong consistency but still provides a meaningful order of operations.
    • Operations are executed in a way that preserves the order in which they were issued by each individual client.
    • However, there may be no global order that satisfies all operations from all clients.
  3. Causal Consistency:

    • Causal consistency ensures that operations that are causally related (one operation depends on the result of another) are seen by all clients in a consistent order.
    • Operations that are not causally related can appear out of order to different clients.
    • Causal consistency strikes a balance between strong consistency and performance, making it suitable for many distributed systems.
  4. Eventual Consistency:

    • Eventual consistency is a weaker consistency model that guarantees that, given enough time without new updates, all replicas of a data item will converge to the same value.
    • It allows for temporary inconsistencies but guarantees that these inconsistencies will be resolved eventually.
    • Eventual consistency is often used in highly available distributed systems where low-latency access is a priority.
  5. Read-your-Writes Consistency:

    • Read-your-writes consistency ensures that a client will always see its own writes when it performs subsequent read operations.
    • This model is often used in systems that prioritize user experience, like web applications, to ensure that users don't see stale data immediately after making updates.
  6. Monotonic Reads and Writes:

    • This consistency model guarantees that if a client reads a particular value of a data item and then writes to that data item, it will not see a previous value when it reads that item again.
    • Monotonic reads and writes provide a basic level of consistency while allowing some flexibility for concurrent updates.
  7. Monotonic Writes:

    • Monotonic writes guarantee that writes from a single client to a specific data item will be applied in the order in which they were issued.
    • This model ensures that a client's writes won't be reordered when applied to the system.

Each of these consistency models serves different use cases and provides a balance between data consistency, system availability, and performance. The choice of a consistency model depends on the specific requirements and constraints of the distributed system and the trade-offs that the system's designers are willing to make.

Consistency ( Quorum Consensus )

Quorum consensus is a concept used in distributed systems, including distributed databases, to ensure data consistency and availability in the presence of network partitions or node failures. It's a voting mechanism that helps determine whether a distributed operation (e.g., read or write) can proceed based on the agreement of a majority of nodes or replicas. The use of quorum consensus is especially important for maintaining consistency in distributed databases.

Here's how quorum consensus works and why it's important for database consistency:

How Quorum Consensus Works:

  1. Replicas and Quorums: In a distributed database, data is often replicated across multiple nodes or servers for redundancy and fault tolerance. Each replica has a vote in the consensus process.

  2. Read Quorum: When a read operation is requested, the database system checks with a subset of replicas (a read quorum). The read quorum is typically configured to be a majority of the replicas to ensure that a majority of nodes have a consistent view of the data.

  3. Write Quorum: For write operations, the database system checks with another subset of replicas (a write quorum). The write quorum is also typically configured to be a majority of the replicas.

  4. Quorum Agreement: To proceed with a read or write operation, the database system requires that a majority of the nodes in the respective quorum agree on the operation. This means that more than half of the replicas must provide their consent (e.g., for a write operation to proceed).

Why Quorum Consensus is Important for Database Consistency:

  1. Data Consistency: Quorum consensus ensures that a majority of replicas agree on the state of the data before allowing a read or write operation to proceed. This helps maintain data consistency, even in the presence of network partitions or node failures.

  2. Availability: While ensuring consistency, quorum consensus also maintains system availability. If a minority of nodes become unavailable due to network issues or failures, the database can still function as long as a majority of nodes are operational.

  3. Fault Tolerance: Quorum consensus provides fault tolerance. Even if a subset of replicas becomes temporarily unavailable or out of sync, the database can continue to operate as long as a majority of nodes are functioning properly.

  4. Trade-Offs: The choice of the quorum size and configuration involves trade-offs between consistency, availability, and fault tolerance. A larger quorum size ensures stronger consistency but may decrease availability, while a smaller quorum size improves availability but may weaken consistency guarantees.

  5. Conflict Resolution: In cases where different nodes have conflicting data due to network partitions, the quorum consensus mechanism can also be used to resolve conflicts and determine the most up-to-date data.

In summary, quorum consensus is a crucial concept for maintaining data consistency and availability in distributed databases. It helps strike a balance between strong consistency and system availability, making it a fundamental component of many distributed database systems, including those used in scenarios where data integrity and reliability are critical.

Sharding

Sharding is a database scaling technique used to manage and distribute large volumes of data across multiple database servers or nodes in a distributed system. The primary purpose of sharding is to improve database performance, scalability, and manageability, especially when dealing with massive datasets. Here's why sharding is needed and how it works:

Why Sharding is Needed:

  1. Scalability: As data grows, a single database server can become a performance bottleneck. Sharding allows you to horizontally partition data across multiple servers, enabling the system to handle increased data volumes and query loads.

  2. Performance: Sharding can significantly improve query performance by distributing data and query processing across multiple servers. This leads to faster response times for both read and write operations.

  3. High Availability: Sharding can enhance fault tolerance and high availability. If one shard or database server fails, it doesn't affect the entire system, reducing the risk of downtime.

  4. Load Balancing: Sharding helps distribute data and query traffic evenly across multiple servers, preventing any single server from being overwhelmed. This load balancing ensures efficient resource utilization.

  5. Isolation: Data in one shard is logically isolated from data in other shards. This can be useful for data separation, access control, and compliance with data privacy regulations.

How Sharding Works:

  1. Data Partitioning: Sharding involves breaking the dataset into smaller, more manageable subsets called shards. The partitioning can be based on various criteria, such as:

    • Range Sharding: Data is divided based on a specified range of values (e.g., customer IDs, dates).
    • Hash Sharding: Data is distributed across shards using a hash function applied to a shard key (e.g., a unique identifier).
    • List Sharding: Data is grouped into shards based on predefined lists or categories.
    • Geographic Sharding: Data is sharded based on geographic regions or locations.
  2. Shard Distribution: Each shard is hosted on a separate database server or node. These servers can be physical machines, virtual machines, or containers, depending on the infrastructure.

  3. Query Routing: A central component, often called a sharding router or coordinator, is responsible for routing queries to the appropriate shard based on the shard key specified in the query.

  4. Metadata Management: The system maintains metadata about shard locations and data distribution, allowing the query router to determine which shard should handle each query.

  5. Scaling: As the dataset grows or query loads increase, you can add more shards and corresponding database servers. Sharding provides a straightforward way to horizontally scale your database infrastructure.

  6. Consistency and Synchronization: To ensure data consistency across shards, you may implement mechanisms for distributed transactions, data replication, and synchronization between shards. These mechanisms vary based on the database technology and architecture used.

  7. Monitoring and Maintenance: Sharded systems require ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure even data distribution, optimize query performance, and handle node failures gracefully.

Challenges and Considerations:

  1. Data Distribution Strategy: Choosing the right sharding strategy based on your application's requirements and access patterns is critical.

  2. Data Migration: Moving data between shards or redistributing data as the dataset grows can be complex and resource-intensive.

  3. Query Routing Overhead: The query router introduces some overhead in routing queries to the correct shard. This overhead should be minimized to maintain optimal performance.

  4. Data Consistency: Ensuring data consistency, especially in distributed transactions, can be challenging and may require careful planning.

Sharding is a powerful technique for managing large datasets and achieving horizontal scalability in databases. Database Replication

Database Replication:

Database replication involves creating and maintaining multiple copies (replicas) of the same database on different servers. The primary purpose of database replication is to improve data availability, fault tolerance, and sometimes read scalability. Here's how it works and why it's used:

  1. Replica Types:

    • Master-Slave Replication: In this setup, there is one primary database (master) that handles both read and write operations, and one or more secondary databases (slaves) that replicate data from the master. Slaves are typically used for read-only operations, offloading read traffic from the master.

    • Master-Master Replication: In a master-master setup, multiple databases act as both master and slave, allowing for read and write operations on any of them. This setup provides better write scalability but can be more complex to manage.

  2. Data Synchronization: Replicas are kept in sync with the master database through replication processes. Changes made on the master are propagated to the replicas, ensuring data consistency.

  3. High Availability: Database replication provides fault tolerance. If the master database fails, one of the replicas can be promoted to serve as the new master, minimizing downtime.

  4. Load Balancing: In read-heavy applications, replicas can be used to distribute read traffic across multiple servers, improving read performance.

Microservices Architecture

Background

In many systems design questions, you will have to design a good amount of functionality for some hypothetical use case. Typically, it makes sense to split each piece of function into separate microservices, which act as self contained units of servers that can interact with other microservices as if they were external services.
Original Approach: Monoliths

All code contained in the same repository, same set of nodes in a cluster responsible for handling any possible application request. This is far more scalable and solves all of the major issues mentioned regarding monoliths in the previous slide, at the cost of adding some complexity to your application layout. Quick Aside: Docker Very relevant for microservice architectures: Applications are packaged into “containers” Each container holds all of the dependencies of an application, as well as their versions, so that the environment that the application will run on is the same whether the code is running locally on a laptop, in a testing environment, or in a production environment on the cloud When deploying to a cloud, you typically preconfigure the capacity of the virtual machine that you want If we wanted a microservice running on each virtual machine, we would have to figure out the capacity that each service needed in advanced, likely would lead to much wasted compute Docker allows running multiple containers on just one virtual machine (acts like a lightweight operating system), giving each container the ability to take the resources that they need in a given moment, leads to far less waste of compute power Conclusion While it generally makes sense for most new applications with a smaller team to start out under a monolith design to develop quickly and reduce added complexity, using a microservice architecture at scale is virtually a necessity. It allows teams to develop quickly on their own without a need for a unified codebase, and provides them with the ability to deploy and scale their service as they see fit. Finally, a bug introduced in the code by one team will not affect the services of another, and failures will be siloed.

Long Polling, Websockets, Server Side Events

In a decent amount of systems design interview questions, there is a need to provide real time updates from a database or server back to a client. While there are multiple options for doing this, each has their own benefits and drawbacks. These things come up in chat applications, ride sharing applications (to continually see where your driver is located), and even things like notification services.

Polling (Naive Implementation) Make a request to the server every few seconds from the client asking for new data. This is bad because you will overload your servers with unnecessary requests! Long Polling Make a typical HTTP request to the server for data, if the server does not have new data to respond with it keeps the request open, and eventually responds once new data is present. At this point, the client will issue another long polling request. If the connection times out, also send another request.
Pros: Easy to implement, universal support Cons: Only one directional, any information sent from client to server must be done through a normal HTTP request Excess load on server by constantly tearing down connections HTTP connections and re-establishing them Possible race condition of multiple requests from same client receiving messages out of order (two tabs open, deduplication needed)

WebSockets WebSockets are a fully bidirectional communication channel between clients and servers. WebSockets are each registered to a port, so a given application service can have around 65,000 active connections before needing to be horizontally scaled. Pros: Bidirectional communication in real time (as opposed to near real time) Lower network overhead due to headers only being sent once Cons: Lesser support for them on older browsers Thundering herd problem due to overhead of establishing a websocket connection if the number of application servers changes May be overkill for infrequent data changes Server Sent Events One way connection from servers to clients, client-side code registers for events from the server. Good for things like stock ticker updates or notifications. Pros: Unlike long polling use persistent HTTP connection as opposed to killing and reconnecting Unlike websockets re-establish failed connections automatically Cons: Single directional communication A lot of concurrent connections can add load on server if they are not needed

Conclusion While generally it is going to be enough in systems design interviews to mention using websockets for most real time applications, it is important to be able to distinguish some of the subtle differences between them and long polling or server side events. In actual tech companies, these latter two are still frequently used due to their widespread support, ease of understanding, and lower overhead.

Time Series Databases

In many applications, there is a pattern of “write-once, read many times” data inserts corresponding to a range of time - things like logs, sensors, or any other consistent data being ingested from a stream follows this rule. As a result, many databases specifically tailored for this use case, such as InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, and Apache Druid have been created. They allow both great throughput for reads and writes on time series data.

Time Series Operations In order to optimize for time series data, let’s consider the access patterns used by applications that might be dealing with it: Writes Primarily inserts to a recent time interval, adjacent values likely similar Generally using a compound index like a timestamp in conjunction with some data source ID Reads Generally from the same timestamp/data source combo over one column of data All from relatively small time interval (probably the most recent one) Deletes Common scenario is to delete time data older than some date prior to the present

Optimizing Writes Should likely build a compound index first sorted on source ID, and then within that sorted on timestamp This allows writes from the same data source over similar intervals of time to be on the same node Optimizing Reads Storing data in a column oriented manner is much faster Generally speaking all timestamps should be sequential and similar and should be able to be compressed a ton The same applies for certain metrics which are similar in value to one another as time progresses Additionally, having all column values in one file reduces disk I/O and allows faster aggregations of column data, generally we only need one or two columns at a time for graphing Optimizing Reads Continued Even within one node, it is better to treat each (source, time interval) tuple as its own chunk table (abstract these away via a large table) Since most writes are going to only a couple of these we can achieve much better performance by caching their entire index in memory Otherwise we would have many more relevant index pages that would occasionally have to be swapped in and out of memory which incurs significant processing overhead

Optimizing Deletes By breaking the main table into many smaller chunk tables, we also greatly optimize on the performance of deletes If using an LSM tree based architecture, each delete of data is treated the same way as a write, and requires adding a tombstone to index files If instead we want to just delete a bunch of old data all at once, we can just delete the corresponding chunk tables/index, as opposed to actually writing all of the deletes to index files and waiting for compaction The same applies to B-trees, where we can just delete the appropriate index as opposed to going through the B-tree many times and setting a bunch of pointers in it to null

While storing time series data is a relatively niche topic, it turns out that using a database specifically made for it can allow for huge gains in performance.
Ultimately, they do so by: Creating separate indexes for each data source and time interval combination Column oriented storage both for fast aggregations as well as compression to reduce space significantly While not every time series database works identically, it seems like across them these are the main features that allow for quick ingestion and processing of such types of data!

What Is GRPC?

gRPC is a modern open-source RPC framework which delivers high performance and efficiency in any environment. It supports both typical request/response interactions and long-running streaming communications. In this post, we’ll dig into what gRPC is, how it works, and some of the associated security issues which should be addressed.

GRPC Meaning gRPC is a robust open-source RPC (Remote Procedure Call) framework used to build scalable and fast APIs. It allows the client and server applications to communicate transparently and develop connected systems. Many leading tech firms have adopted gRPC, such as Google, Netflix, Square, IBM, Cisco, & Dropbox. This framework relies on HTTP/2, protocol buffers, and other modern technology stacks to ensure maximum API security, performance, and scalability.

Basic GRPC Concepts

gRPC owes its development and success to the use of the leading technologies that perform better than JSON and XML and provide increased API security. Most of the gRPC advantages stem from the following concepts:

Protocol Buffers Protocol buffers, or Protobuf, is Google’s serialization/deserialization protocol that enables the easy definition of services and auto-generation of client libraries. gRPC uses this protocol as their Interface Definition Language (IDL) and serialization toolset. Its current version is proto3, which has the latest features and is easier to use.

gRPC services and messages between clients and servers are defined in proto files. The Protobuf compiler, protoc, generates client and server code that loads the .proto file into the memory at runtime and uses the in-memory schema to serialize/deserialize the binary message. After code generation, each message is exchanged between the client and remote service.

The entire flow shows that Protobuf offers some great benefits over JSON and XML. Parsing with Protobuf requires fewer CPU resources since data is converted into a binary format, and encoded messages are lighter in size. So, messages are exchanged faster, even in machines with a slower CPU, such as mobile devices. Streaming Streaming is another key concept of gRPC, where many processes can take place in a single request. The multiplexing capability (sending multiple responses or receiving multiple requests together over a single TCP connection) of HTTP/2 makes it possible. Here are the main types of streaming:

Server-streaming RPCs – The client sends a single request to the server and receives back a stream of data sequences. The sequence is preserved, and server messages continuously stream until there are no messages left. Client-streaming RPCs – The client sends a stream of data sequences to the server, which then processes and returns a single response to the client. Once again, gRPC guarantees message sequencing within an independent RPC call. Bidirectional-streaming RPCs – It is two-way streaming where both client and server sends a sequence of messages to each other. Both streams operate independently; thus, they can transmit messages in any sequence. The sequence of messages in each stream is preserved. HTTP/2 gRPC is developed on HTTP/2, which was published in 2015 to overcome the HTTP/1.1 limitations. While it is compatible with HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 brings many advanced capabilities, such as:

Binary Framing Layer – Unlike HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 request/response is divided into small messages and framed in binary format, making message transmission efficient. With binary framing, the HTTP/2 protocol has made request/response multiplexing possible without blocking network resources. Streaming – Bidirectional full-duplex streaming in which the client can request and the server can respond simultaneously. Flow Control – Flow control mechanism is used in HTTP/2, enabling detailed control of memory used to buffer in-flight messages. Header Compression – Everything in HTTP/2, including headers, is encoded before sending, significantly improving overall performance. Using the HPACK compression method, HTTP/2 only shares the value different from the previous HTTP header packets. Processing – With HTTP/2, gRPC supports both synchronous and asynchronous processing, which can be used to perform different types of interaction and streaming RPCs. All these features of HTTP/2 enable gRPC to use fewer resources, resulting in reduced response times between apps and services running in the cloud and longer battery life for a client running mobile devices.

Channels Channels are a core concept in gRPC. The HTTP/2 streams allow many simultaneous streams on one connection; channels extend this concept by supporting multiple streams over multiple concurrent connections. They provide a way to connect to the gRPC server on a specified address and port and are used in creating a client stub.

Cassandra

Cassandra is a NoSQL, wide column database designed for both high read and write throughput. It was first created at Facebook, and then has since become open source under the apache license. In these slides, we will see how it achieves this, as well as some of the best use cases for the technology.

Recall: The reason that SQL databases tend to scale poorly are that many operations touch multiple partitions due to the tendency to have highly related data. Instead, Cassandra has opted to optimize for single partition writes and reads, and make those very fast. Because it is NoSQL, the hope is that you can store all relevant information in one single row within a partition.

Cassandra is a wide column database - rows of a table can have any number and type of columns, but they all must contain one primary key known as the partition key. Additionally, it can designate other rows of the row to be known as clustering keys.

As opposed to many traditional SQL databases (which use B-trees), Cassandra uses an LSM tree + SSTable based storage engine. Recall: Writes are extremely fast as they are first sent to memory Depending on how often log compaction is performed, frequent updates or deletes of a row can take up a lot of extra disk space The performance of reads can be a bit slower if you need to search for a key through the SSTables However, Cassandra uses bloom filters as an optimization (approximates the contents of a set)

As we might expect, Cassandra uses the partitioning key, in conjunction with consistent hashing, to determine which replica to send a given row to. Each shard is replicated, with the number of replicas specified by the user.

Dynamo style database: all writes are sent to every single replica for a given partition, and the administrator can choose how many replicas need to respond with a success before returning a success to the client (can use quorums). This means that there will inevitably be conflicting writes: Handle conflicts using last write wins Requires keeping server clocks close to in sync via something like NTP, will be lost data Read repair on reads, if client sees a replica with an outdated value it will update it Anti-entropy process running in background ensures eventual consistency of replicas

Note: if for some reason replicas cannot handle writes in a given moment, the coordinator will store the write to be sent to them later, and then perform a hinted handoff.

Data stored on replicas Each replica added should allow read and write throughput to scale linearly Choose replication topology, number of replicas in addition to location such as different rack or data center Faults detected via gossip protocol Nodes keep track of heartbeats received by other nodes in the cluster and their timestamp and send these via gossip, if a node has not gossipped in a long time it is presumed dead

Cassandra uses the clustering keys to create indexes of the data within a partition - note that these are only local indexes, not global indexes. If you have many clustering keys in order to achieve multiple different sort orders, Cassandra will denormalize the data such that it keeps two copies of it, slows down writes.

WRITE HEAVY APPLICATIONS!!! If data is generally self contained, and only needs to be fetched with other data from its partition. Examples: sensor readings, chat messages, user activity tracking

Great for write heavy applications for millions or even billions of users with performance as the main concern See messaging, sensor readings, activity tracking Main pitfalls are the lack of strong consistency, lack of ability to support data relationships (outside of sorting data in a given partition), lack of global secondary indexes In these scenarios we will need other options!

deployment strategies

Recreate: Version A is terminated then version B is rolled out.

Ramped (also known as rolling-update or incremental): Version B is slowly rolled out and replacing version A.

Blue/Green: Version B is released alongside version A, then the traffic is switched to version B.

Canary: Version B is released to a subset of users, then proceed to a full rollout.

A/B testing: Version B is released to a subset of users under specific condition.

Shadow: Version B receives real-world traffic alongside version A and doesn’t impact the response.
