Summary
Dear LinkOut provider to Taxonomy DB,
NCBI Taxonomy is migrating to the NCBI Datasets platform, with the transition taking effect October 31st, 2026. This move is part of a broader modernization of NCBI's Taxonomy resources. Please read about this transition in NCBI's public announcement NCBI Taxonomy's New Home, which states directly: "LinkOuts using third-party provided links will be discontinued." The Datasets platform does not support the dynamic LinkOut display mechanism that has allowed your links to appear on Taxonomy record pages. Selected taxonomic resources of general interest will display in NCBI Datasets, however, they will not rely on third party provided links data. This is a platform limitation, not a reflection of the value of your resource or your relationship to NCBI.
As a practical consequence, as of October 31st 2026, your database links will no longer display on Taxonomy records specifically. Your links to other databases, e.g., Nucleotide, Protein, BioSample, PubMed through LinkOut are unaffected and will continue to function precisely as they do today. We recognize that losing the Taxonomy connection still represents a reduction in how researchers reach your resource.
No action is required on your part for this change to take effect on our end.
If you would like to discuss the change, we welcome your feedback, please write to both taxonomy@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov and linkout@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
